The Great American Road Trip

by Gina Scarpa

Tonight, on The Great American Road Trip, the families continue down Route 66, making a pit stop at the famous Ted Drewes Frozen Custard.  No challenge, just custard.  I’d be fine with it.  They make their way to go spelunking (exploring caves) at the Meramec Caverns.  Some of them don’t even know what spelunking is.  I know what it is, thanks to the game “Where In The World Is Camen Sandiego?”  You know that’s why you know what it is, too.  Meramec Caverns was a hideout for Jesse James and his gang in the late 1800s.  A Jesse James impersonator comes guns a blazin’ out from the caves, firing shots into the air and scaring the heck out of the kids.  What were they thinking on that one?!

No challenge at the custard stand, no challenge at the caves.  Host Reno Collier finally meets up with the contestants to reveal tonight’s King of the Road Challenge.  The next stop will be Branson, Missouri, where a family has to perform a four minute show.  Despite the fact that they’re on reality tv, the idea of getting up in front of a crowd of people and being judged makes a few families sick to their stomachs.  The DiSalvatores decide that their talent is that their talentless, which is actually pretty funny.  What’s not funny are the Faverey kids, who complain every second they’re on the road.  Don’t get me wrong.  The DiSalvatores are right up there but that’s 99% Amy’s fault.

The families arrive at the theater, get into costume, and prepare to go on stage.  Tonight’s judges are Andy Williams, Yakoff Smirnoff, and Raeanne Presley (the mayor of Branson).  The Pollards decide to do a good ol’ Southern rendition of “Old MacDonald” while the Ricos perform a cute play about Route 66.  The bottom three families are the DiSalvatores, the Favereys, and the Montgomereys.  Nobody is going home this week, though.  Instead, the top 3 families, the Pollards, Ricos, and Cootes, will compete later for an amazing reward.  The judges were absolutely dead on, especially when they named the Pollard family the winners.  Yay Pollard family!!

In tonight’s challenge, the tables will turn for the top 3 families.  The dads will have to make their way through a maze of classic cars, grab some food from a concession stand, and bring it back to their family.  The catch is that the kids will be controlling them and they’ll be wearing a helmet that completely blocks their vision.  The winning family will receive a vacation to Hollywood to attend the premiere of a movie.  None of the families jump up and down over it and I can’t figure out why!  Maybe they’re just overwhelmed.  The unstoppable Coote family wins for a second week in a row.
