Biggest Loser Episode 3 - It's All There in Black and White

So week three in Biggest Loser Couples finds eight teams remaining, after the green teem (Jeni & Lynn) and brown teams (Curtis & Mallory) fell below the yellow line and were sent home in weeks prior.

Jackie & Dan, the orange team started this week's episode by hiking up a rather large hill to pick their prize for being the "Biggest Loser Team of the Week". They chose the "game play" prize over "family" and "luxury", winning two votes at the next elimination, a powerful strategic move. Now all they had to do was remain above the yellow line in order to utilize the votes.

With last week's weigh ins coming in at less than stellar, Bob and Jillian were on a mission to push their contestants to drop some serious lbs, and most of the players jumped in with both feet. Neill, however failed to impress his trainers and fellow castmates with his somewhat renewed enthusiasm for the game.

Whether he just didn't realize the strength that he has, or he just wasn't whole heartedly in the competition, Neill's efforts were not viewed by the rest of the group as 100%. During the first week, he put himself under the gun, and wasn't able to prove to the players his heart was really in the game. Most felt he was going through the motions and putting on a good show, which fell flat compared to his dynamo of a wife, Amanda who was pouring her heart and soul into picking up the slack.

In a touching segment, Jillian helped to bridge the gap between mother and daughter team, Bette-Sue and Ali, opening a line of communication for the two to let go of some of the emotional baggage that had been trapping them. The tearful conversation brought down a wall, and re-committed the two of them both as partners and family.

For the challenge this week, the teams picked a runner to trudge through a mud pit towards a pile of medicine balls, shlep them back through the pit and place them in a rival team's station. Once a team received 8 medicine balls, they were out of the challenge. The prize, immunity. At once, most of the teams banded together in an effort to knock out the black team, who had won both previous challenges.

On the other side, the black, grey and pink team formed an alliance. Tempers flared as one by one the balls piled up against the orange, black and white team. Mother/son team orange was the first to be eliminated, so that they would not hold the power of immunity and two votes. Amanda and Neill, the white team, brought a close second, and Jay's comment to Bernie to just go ahead and put the black team out brought them third place. Mark didn't find this cute or funny, and in a moment of rage, went off on his brother, leaving other teams slack jawed as they watched the heated exchange between siblings.

Ball racks filled up quickly after that, cutting yellow, pink, blue, then purple out of the running for immunity. The grey team of Trent and Roger won immunity for the next weigh in.

After the challenge, the orange duo went straight to the treadmill to discuss the day's events as the other teams went to their rooms or back to the dorm. Mark was rather unaffected by how folks reacted to his rage, feeling it was his business with his brother and they shouldn't worry about it one way or the other. He did, however, take the time to touch base with the rest of the players and let them know that he flew off the handle in an effort to save some face. Not too many people seemed to embrace the sincerity of his words, reading it as a half-hearted explanation.

Week three brought in some awesome numbers for most teams. Paul and Kelly, the divorced couple surprised themselves and everyone else with a 4.26% weight loss of 23 pounds as a team. Maggie and Jenn fell again below the yellow line with 10 lbs and 2.14% lost, an emotional blow to them both. Also below the yellow line were Amanda and Neill, who lost 11 pounds and 2.25%.

The rest of the group weighed in with:

  • Jackie/Dan: -19 lbs, 3.8%

  • Mark/Jay: -19 lbs, 3.57%

  • Bernie/Brittany: -20 lbs, 4.25%

  • Roger/Trent: -22 lbs, 2.97%

  • Bette-Sue/Ali: -14 lbs, 3.10%

Once weigh in was completed, Neill and Amanda went to the others, and shared why they should stay in the competition. Amanda's tearful plea touched the members, but they immediately cooled to Neill's emotionless statement of "We're not here to politic, or sway your votes". Not "I'm sorry if it seems like I haven't been in the game, I want to work hard", or anything like that. As a viewer, I kind of sat there and wondered "That's it? That's all he is going to say with his head on the chopping block, knowing that the others don't think he wants to be there? Does he remember what happened to Lynn and Jenni in the same situation?!?!"

Go figure, elimination comes around, and the first four votes were for Neill and Amanda, simply due to Neill's lack of enthusiasm. For some reason, the contestants of Biggest Loser Couples did not respond to him on a personal level, and couldn't see past the appearance of apathy to the anxiety below the surface. The couples responded mostly to Neill's lack of commitment, and weren't willing to give him another chance when placed next to Maggie and Jenn, who worked their tails off for every pound.

Since returning home, Neill has lost another 23 pounds, bringing his grand total to 48 lost, and Amanda dropped an impressive 24 more after coming home, for 45 pounds gone. They are working out together, utilizing circuit training in addition to a variety of exercise techniques to reach their goals by the finale in April.
