In theory, Hagan Parkman and Marty Cobb should have been able to reach the pit stop without being eliminated on last week’s episode of The Amazing Race. Despite the fact that the Road Block in Colombia slowed them down, they made up ground in a cooking challenge during the Detour. However, they mother/daughter team made the fatal error of not fully reading their clue and opted to run on foot to the Detour instead of driving which allowed Darius and Cameron Benson to narrowly squeak by. We chatted with Marty and Hagan this week about their memorable but short lived Amazing Race experience.
How did it feel to be on a season with all social media stars and did you recognize anyone?
Marty: Well, we were beyond thrilled just to be part of the show. We’ve watched every episode and we’re huge fans. I didn’t really know anyone but Hagan clued me in.
Hagan, how did the teams get along this season?
Hagan: I feel like, this season, everyone is closer than we’ve previously seen because we do have a lot in common. Some teams did know each other which made it unique.
What’s the toughest part of being on the race versus watching it from your couch?
Hagan: Definitely on the race, when you’re watching it on tv, you see teams showing up from point A to Point B but that’s a 5 or 6 mile run.
Is it hard to watch this episode back, especially when it gets to the part where you are running to the Detour?
Hagan: Well it’s not just that. We can’t blame it on that one mistake. That wasn’t our breaking point. We had tough luck all day.
You handled yourselves pretty well, considering the situation. How did you manage your stress?
Marty: We both agreed on a few things. Number one, we would do anything we would have to do to get the job done. We would not give up and stay positive and encourage each other. We’re in it to win it and we’re a team. We’ve watched the show and we realize anything can happen and that’s the fun of it. It’s frustrating when it’s happening to you because we feel like we should’ve gotten the last ticket on that flight, we had a slow cab driver and those things would have been an hour and a half worth of time.
Even though your time on The Amazing Race was cut short, do you have a favorite moment?
Hagan: My favorite memory was when my mom finished that cave challenge. She was the first parent out of the cave. I saw this pink marshmallow running out of the cave, she’s bleeding and sweating. I couldn’t see what she was doing and I was just waiting
Marty: Well when I came out of that cave, she screamed and we fell and that was definitely memorable.
Are you rooting for anyone in particular?
Hagan: We like all of the teams, as cheesy as it sounds. Everyone was extremely nice. We love Tyler and Korey, we had an immediate connection with them.
