Dancing With the Stars: Season 16 Prom Night

by Kylene Hamulak

It's Prom Night on Dancing With the Stars! As the couples come to the dance floor, I realize I was totally ready for all the Prom night puns but not nearly prepared enough for the terrible Prom fashions!

THE GOOD:

Aly and Mark, Viennese Waltz

Aly missed a lot of school dances due to training, but she did get to go to Prom. Her date was a 10, but don't ask if they made out afterwards cause that's embarassing. What the hell is cupid doing hung from the ceiling? Oh, I get it, they're struck by Cupid's arrow and begin to waltz around the floor. Len begins the night with what I hope will be the last April Fool's joke, telling Aly he wasn't very impressed (but really he was). Bruno says she both moves and expresses very well. Carrie Ann loves her movement but wanted her to stay in character a little more - the guys on the panel, however, disagree and thinks he did a great job in character.

Total Score: 23 (7 (Carrie Ann)-8-8)

Kelly and Derek, Jive

Kelly describes Derek as a "wasp face" when he gets irritated with her if she's not getting things perfect.  I'm not Derek's biggest fan, but I do have to give him style points. Their Jive is to "Footloose," and they're a super cute couple hitting every single step. Bruno calls them "sharper than a samurai sword" and is impressed by the crispness of the dance.. Carrie says it was "ridiculously amazing" and notes that it was the fastest routine she had ever seen. Len declares Kellie "officially the queen of the Prom!"

Total Score: 25 (8-9 (Len)-8)

Victor and Lindsay, Contemporary

As a street kid, Victor didn't get to go to Prom, so this is his chance. Lindsay thinks his strength will help him in Contemporary, which features a lot of lifts, and she's right. This is a beautiful dance in a lot of ways and, I think, Victor's strongest performance. Bruno is on his feet by the end, and Carrie Ann is giddy. "Victor! You're a dancer! That was breathtaking," she says. Len was pleasantly surprised, though he does want him to work more on dance. Bruno calls it unbelievable. "You make your partner proud."

Total Score: 23 (8-7 (Len)-8)

Jacoby and Karina, Rhumba

Jacoby went solo to his Prom, where he did more pranking than dancing. He shares that he's dancing for his New Orleans high school, destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. He's digging deep to get more romantic for this routine. The floor is bathed in red, and he's shirtless for the dance, which is a totally restrained version of Jacoby that I don't think anyone expected. Bruno says he was "smoldering like a volcano of passion" and, despite some little foot things, thought it was brilliant. Carrie Ann is impressed by his artistry, and Len can't believe it either. He notes the refinement and quality of movement. "You did a good job there, Jacoby - oh yes!"

Total Score: 24 (8-8-8)

Sean and Peta, Cha Cha

Sean doesn't know much about dancing, but you know what The Bachelor DOES know about? Roses. Mostly giving them. He brings a corsage for Peta and for the rest of us? The iconic YMCA dance. It's fun to watch, but is it a Cha Cha? They certainly add some elements for the ballroom! Len says it was his best dance - full of energy and attack, though he needs to work on his feet. Bruno is pleased - "you can definitely entertain!" Carrie Ann notes how defined and sharp his moves are, but suggests they were missing one thing from their routine: BRUNO! He promptly gets up from behind the table to show off his YMCA moves!

Total Score: 21 (7-7-7)

Zendaya and Val, Viennese Waltz

Zendaya is too young to have her own Prom experience, so she's channeling her grandmother's instead. They are an elegant couple on the dance floor, and it's beautiful to watch, and her grandmother in the audience looks proud. Bruno calls it enchanting, and, even with a couple of stumbles, says it was beautiful. Carrie Ann believes the best is yet to come, but notes that her emotional connection to the moves is beyond her years. Len thinks her dancing comes very naturally to her.

Total Score: 24 (8-8-8)

THE BAD:

DL and Cheryl, Salsa

Funny: DL tells us how he rented himself out for $25 to any girls who couldn't get Prom dates. Awkward: He then tells Cheryl she's his best looking Prom date. Their "Sex Machine" routine takes place on an elevated dance box in the middle of the floor, which limits their range of motion. What they do looks fine, but it doesn't seem like they do much.  Len is booed when he says, "If you're a sex machine, then I'm America's Next Top Model," but he's rights when he notes all the things it was missing. Bruno appreciated the effort but thinks he was missing the hip action. Carrie Ann sees the improvement and thinks baby steps are what it's about. Given the mic, DL explains, "It's hard for me to move my hips cause every time I do I had a baby!"

Total Score: 16 (6 (Carrie Ann)-5-5)

Wynonna and Tony, Samba

Wynonna's routine is, as she says, her opportunity to release her inner tigress. Which, apparently, means dancing on a pole. Tony, what the hell kind of high school did you go to that had a POLE at your prom? Tony is really in to the routine, but Wynonna sort of just looks like she wants it to be over. Carrie Ann is pained as she says she's rooting for Wynonna but didn't see anything "coming out." Len compares her to Mt. Rushmore: "You look magnificent but you don't move!" Bruno was expecting wild child but calls the performance "sedated...you've got to hit it hard, darling."

Total Score: 15 (5-5-5)

THE REST:

Everyone on the floor: All the couples participated in a group dance to open the show, and their solos bring out some of the signature moves we probably won't see in their competitive routines, including a sprinkler, the worm, and some moves that chaperones definitely would've been outlawed in plenty of high school gyms!

Prom King and Queen: In kind of a neat addition, viewers will get to vote on the King and Queen of Prom, with the each team getting an additional two points for their crowns.

Aaaaachoo - Cha Cha Cha:

Andy and Sharna, Cha Cha

Andy may have been Homecoming King (may...he says yes, but I'm skeptical), but he's having problems at rehearsal. He's nervous about hurting Sharna, and they're yelling at each other. The premise of their routine is nerd gets stood up by (I think?) cat woman, and it's a lot of fun. He's not the best dancer, but he's committed to it, ripping his shirt open by the end. Bruno admits the timing is off, and the placement is odd, but the entertainment is "fully on!" Carrie Ann gives him credit for trying and for keeping up. Len says, "You're like a sneeze - you know it's coming, and there's nothing you can do about it." He acknowledges that he's not a great dancer, but he feels better watching Andy than he did before they danced.

Total Score: 18 (6-6-6)

Cheers and Jeers:

Ingo and Kym, Paso Doble

Ingo and Kym are having their fantasy Prom tonight, with Ingo stealing the Prom queen for a night with the bad boy...which is hard to imagine watching him in rehearsal battling aches and pains with a creaky body! The routine is better than expected, a powerful paso. Carrie Ann thinks he captured the power of the dance, but tells him to work on making his core stronger. Len thinks it could have had cleaner arms and stronger posture but notes, "there's more to cheer than jeer, so well done." Bruno recommends that with all the power he has, "sometimes you have to hold it in to show it out."

Total Score: 21 (7-7-7)

Giggy The Dog Says Vote:

Lisa and Gleb, Viennese Waltz

Lisa and Gleb understand the importance of having the fan vote, and Lisa understands the importance of Gleb being shirtless to do that. She's working on her dancing too - as Gleb says, "you LOOK like a dancer...when you don't move." As expected, their routine LOOKs lovely, but there isn't much substance. Len says she needs to work on posture and footwork, but he likes the feel of it. Bruno thinks it was much better, but "you miss passes and you deflate." Carrie Ann loves watching them and calls her elegant and, as a couple, beautiful to look at.

Total Score: 21 (7-7-7)

Final Thoughts: A lot of the dancers were terrific tonight, even those who have previously had a tough time impressing the judges. DL and Cheryl will have a tough time avoiding the bottom two again, and I think Lisa and Gleb will be likely to join them (again). Who's going home? I think Wynonna and Tony are the most at risk, but if fans vote her Prom Queen, she'll might just win the crown AND a chance to dance next week.

The Standings:

25: Kelly and Derek

24: Jacoby and Karina, Zendaya and Val

23: Aly and Mark, Victor and Lindsay,

21: Ingo and Kym, Lisa and Gleb, Sean and Peta

18: Andy and Sharna

16: DL and Cheryl

15: Wynonna and Tony
