Laura Kathleen on Project Runway All Stars Season 2

by Todd Betzold

There always has to be that one villain on every reality show that everyone loves to hate. This season on Project Runway All Stars that designer was Laura Kathleen Planck. She returned to Project Runway and seemed to be annoying and full of herself and came off as catty to so many people. Was this really the case? After her elimination last night on Project Runway All Stars, she spoke to RealityWanted and other reporters in a conference call about the way she was portrayed and her experiences on Project Runway All Stars.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What was your favorite challenge from this season?
A. Laura Kathleen: I would have to probably say the one I won (laughs). It always feels good, but not to mention Diane von Furstenberg. Being from the Midwest, I wasn't exposed to as much fashion and she was like a household name from the 70s. I have been idolizing her since I was a little girl and then having her announce that to me. That had to be my favorite moment and I felt like I won it because I really tried.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: Anything to say to your fans out there supporting you this season?
A. Laura Kathleen: I appreciate them tuning in because it only helps my cause, but also if you ever see me out anywhere and you want to talk about the show, I'm more than happy to. I always find it funny when people are like I didn't know if I should come and say hi to you or not. Of course, that's why I put myself in this realm of realm of reality TV to kind of connect with fans and viewers. I do appreciate all the support for me, but not to negatively talk about the other designers either. It's so hard when you get a tweet and it's really sweet to you, but then talks bad about one of the competitors. Even though the show makes it look like we are all fighting, I do really, truly care about them.

Q. What made you want to come back to Project Runway?
A. Laura Kathleen: Being on Project Runway, you say you want to be a designer, but how does it actually happen? It gives you an opportunity to be on a platform and show your work and test it out to see if you get a good response. I really enjoyed filming and the challenges from Season 9, so I thought All Stars would be even better and the talent would be even stronger since this is the All Stars season.

Q. Do you feel you were accurately portrayed on the show?
A. Laura Kathleen: (laughs) No, I don't think I was accurately portrayed. Viewers that are kind people and educated people would know that there is a lot of heresy. There was a lot from one contestant on the show that decided to talk about me a lot and they would just go to clips of me making facial expression and it was supposed to pertain to whatever they were saying. It's funny because I really enjoyed All Stars and enjoyed the people and probably became better friends with people on All Stars. I think if I really was a catty person I wouldn't have made the friends that I did. The other thing is I was portrayed that I am some rich girls (laughs). I am not. I have a business I am starting and my fiancé has a business he is starting as well and if anybody knows how starting businesses are, it's tough. By all means, that statement and that whole image that was trying to be portrayed on this season wasn't true either.

Q. What's next for you?
A. Laura Kathleen: I'm really excited to be expanding my jewelry line, which you could see me wearing on the show a lot. It is available on LauraKathleen.com, so I am excited to offer that. Through the help of Althea Harper and they really didn't show our friendship, but she's become a really great friend of mine and she has helped me out with manufacturing even more than I could ever thank her. I'm really excited to be able to lower the price-point of what we were manufacturing our clothes. We'll be offering the more affordable line in 2013 for the fall.

Q. What did you think of these judges versus Heidi, Michael and Nina?
A. Laura Kathleen: We had so many conversations at night in our groups about the difference between the two. Of course, it is going to be different. Three or four people at a time are going to have their own opinion about fashion, so it's so objective. I did find Carolyn Murphy to be very, very warm, not that Heidi wasn't warm, but Carolyn seemed to be a very loving person and conscious of her words and how it affected us as designers. I loved Tim very much, but Joanna was really helpful and it helped me be a better designer. I would have liked Joanna as a mentor more on Season 9 as well. Michael and Isaac are quite on the same level. I think the All Stars judges acknowledged that we worked hard and we've been through it before and a lot of us are at different stages in our careers than when we started on Project Runway, so I thought the judges acknowledged that and were sensitive to it as well.

Q. Of the remaining designers, who would you like to design for you?
A. Laura Kathleen: Uli said it on this episode, but we have a very similar taste in everything that she wore and her accessories, so I think I'd like Uli to. I looked up to her when she was on the show during Season 5.

Q. Do you have any regrets over the last challenge or anything you wish you would have done differently?
A. Laura Kathleen: I really didn't have any regrets, which really put me at peace for saying goodbye and that was my last challenge on All Stars. I loved the fur, I know that they didn't and I totally respect that opinion and I can see where they are coming from. I really would have loved to have a professional pleater in the room (laughs). I did the best that I could with what I had, but I really loved the design.
