So You Think You Can Dance Season 9

By Kylene Hamulak

The final four dancers of So You Think You Can Dance have one last shot to impress the judges and America, and Tiffany, Eliana, Chehon and Cyrus begin by telling us that they'd never thought they'd make it this far. It's been 16 weeks - that IS a long journey. Also long? Tonight's show - each dancer will perform FIVE times. Five. FIVE! I mean...I enjoy watching them, but is it really necessary to have four dancers perform FIVE times? Well, regardless, joining Nigel and Mary tonight is Rob Marshall, so let's get started.

Dancers: Eliana and Cyrus
Style: Paso Doble
Song: The Game Has Change - Daft Punk
Choreographer: Jason Gilkison
Eliana and Cyrus's Paso routine switches the roles up, making Eliana the matador while Cyrus embodies the cape. Nigel tells Eliana she has a magical combination of performance and technique and tells Cyrus that he deserves to be in the finale. Mary says Cyrus really delivered the passion and drama of the Paso and puts Eliana on the hot tamale train - she loved them tonight. Rob thought it was beautiful.

Dancers: Tiffany, with Season 4's Will
Style: Contemporary
Song: The Time Is Now - Moloko
Choregrapher: Sonya Tayeh
Tiffany is grateful that Sonya started her on this journey, showing her in her first performance that she was capable of more than she ever realized. She wants to show America that she's grateful too, and her routine really proves why she's still in the competition. Mary calls her the epitome of a great dancer. Rob says that Tiffany is just fantastic to watch. Nigel congratulates Tiffany, calling her a tremendous dancer.

Dancers: Eliana and Chehon
Style: Ballet
Song: The Nutcracker Suite Pas De Deux - Bruton APM Studios
Choreographer: Marat Daukayev
As Eliana notes, most people probably expect these two dancers to be fabulous at a classical ballet routine. She is correct, because that is exactly what I thought. And it is gorgeous, earning a standing ovation. Rob calls Eliana's extension breathtaking and says the performance was beautiful. Nigel says it's a wonderful classical piece. Mary agrees that it is a spectacular celebration of ballet...and then she gets choked up.

Dancers: Tiffany and Cyrus
Style: Lyrical Hip Hop
Song: Best Thing I Never Had - Beyonce
Choreographer: Tessandra Chavez
There's not much to say about Tiffany and Cyrus's routine that hasn't already been said about them as dancers. They're both terrifically expressive, so when they're performing together, the best of that comes out. Nigel begins by congratulating them both for never being in the bottom 2/3 and thinks they're both incredible. Mary says they killed the routine. Rob says they both have abandon, which is his favorite quality in a great dancer - he calls the routine his favorite so far.

Group Dance: Eliana, Tiffany, Chehon and Cyrus
Song: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (District 78 Remix) - KPM Studio Artists
Choreographer: Tyce Diorio
The group routine is cute, showcasing each of the dancers in their signature style (which is why no particular "style" is noted). There's no critique for this one, so the the applause of the judges (and the audience) is all we're going to get.

Dancer: Eliana
Style: Ballet
Song: Passacaglia - Johann Johannsson
Eliana admits that when she was named Cyrus's partner, she was nervous about them being on opposite ends of the dance spectrum. She says she felt like she was getting lost in the shadows, but at some point realized that people might have been noticing her because of Cyrus - the partnership really worked. When she was paired with Alex, however, she says she finally felt like she was herself.

Dancers: Chehon, with Season 2's Allison
Style: Contemporary
Song: Leave - Once
Choreographer: Stacey Tookey
Stacey is very excited about watching Chehon perform this routine, and for good reason. The performance really showcases his strengths and is a beautiful partnership with Allison that results in a standing ovation from the judges. The standout move? A one-handed lift that impresses everyone watching. Mary is tongue-tied (calling Stacey "Nommy Eminated"), and describes Chehon as "freedom." Rob says the height is unbelievable, "we were dying out here." Nigel thinks Chehon really came alive with Allison.

Dancers: Eliana and Tiffany
Style: Broadway
Song: When You're Good to Mama - Chicago, The Musical
Choreographer: Ray Leeper
The girls will be dancing a Broadway burlesque, as they will be joined on the stage by a special prop - a pole! It's a really fun routine and the girls are amazing - I'm not even sure how they defied gravity the way they did, and the judges are out of their seats. Rob calls it extraordinary and fierce. Mary says it was magnificent and "crazy great." Nigel composes himself enough to tell them it was fabulous.

Dancer: Cyrus
Style: Animation
Song: Holy Ghost - Messinian
Cyrus auditioned in Atlanta for the sole purpose of showcasing animation. He had a tough time going through the different styles in Vegas, but seems proud of how much he's grown as an entertainer and as a person.

Dancer: Tiffany
Style: Contemporary
Song: I Believe - Fantasia
Tiffany had some struggles on her journey to the finale too - in fact, she didn't even make it through initially, having to prove herself in the choreography round before getting her ticket to Vegas. Her turning point came in the ballroom round of Vegas, when she put everything she had into getting on the show and immediately got a positive reaction from the judges. From then on, she fought to be noticed by America.

Dancers: Cyrus and Chehon
Style: Jazz
Song: Fangs (District 78 Remix) - Little Red Lung
Choreographer: Sonya Tayeh
Showcasing the strength of the guys, the performance is unique and very cool, giving them each a chance to shine. I think the girls' performance was a bit more dynamic (but, I mean, there was a POLE), but the guys give a good effort. Nigel says he's so proud of Cyrus and how he has grown, calling him his favorite person on the show. He thinks Chehon is fantastic and his favorite dancer on the show this year. He says they're both inspirational. Mary feels the same way, and she's very proud of both of them. Rob notes that the camaraderie between the two dancers was evident.

There is a momentary break for a performance by B-Boy Jean Sok, who dances with only one leg. Talk about inspiring.

Dancer: Chehon
Style: Contemporary
Song: How It Ends - Devotchka
As we are all aware, Chehon's biggest challenge on the show has been to show off his personality. As a ballet dancer, he's so used to being perfect that it has been, at times, difficult for him to express more emotion. As he notes, his mom's first time seeing him dance on the show was one time he couldn't hide his emotion, as he cried during his solo routine.

Dancers: Eliana, with Season 7's Alex
Style: Contemporary
Song: Without You - Harry Nilsson
Choreographer: Travis Wall
Eliana could not be more excited to be working with Alex again on a Travis Wall routine. The fun they have in rehearsal translates to a terrific performance, but, at this point, are we surprised? It's actually breathtaking to watch. Rob describes it as poetry. Nigel says it was his favorite routine of the night, bringing all of his favorite things together (including Eliana as his favorite dancer of all time on the show. You've been dethroned, Chehon). Mary agrees that it was one of her favorite routines of the night as well.

Dancers: Tiffany and Chehon
Style: Rumba
Song: Love Me Tender - Adam Levy and Norah Jones
Choreographer: Dmetry Chaplin
The challenge for Tiffany and Chehon in their Rumba is finding the chemistry. Whether it's the choreography or just the two terrific dancers, they manage to discover it and deliver a very sweet routine. Mary thinks it was beautiful, and says the movement was gorgeous (even if she didn't really feel the chemistry). Rob calls it sexy and says that he did feel the connection. Nigel notes how much sexier a dance can be when there's control of the movement (vs the fun pole dance).

Dancers: Cyrus, with Season 4's tWitch
Style: Animation
Song: Like a Criminal - District 78
Choreographer: Christopher Scott
It's no surprise that they've saved the best for last - Cyrus and tWitch are two of the most unique dancers ever on the show, so pairing them together was a no-brainer. The performance is unlike anything that's ever been on the SYTYCD stage. Rob calls it crazy, noting how exciting it is to see them together. Mary loves it, saying they stole the show. Nigel loves it too, and he describes them as "world class." Then he, weirdly, tells Cyrus that he'd vote for Chehon because he's been dancing towards this his entire life. I mean, I totally understand his point and (to some degree) agree with what he's saying, but it's just sort of uncomfortable, with Cyrus standing up there as Nigel point blank says, "I'm not voting for you tonight."

But that won't really matter now - what matters is who YOU vote for. So that's it for Season 9 - all that's left is the voting before the latest dance champions are named next Tuesday night!

So You Think You Can Dance airs next Tuesday night at 8/7c on Fox.
