A few days ago, we reported that producer Jeff Rice (who worked on this season of The Amazing Race) and his assistant Katheryne Fuller were poisoned in Uganda. However, new reports are surfacing pointing to cocaine overdose. Police in Uganda have determined that Rice was not poisoned by food or drink.

The officials in Uganda are now hoping that Katheryne Fuller can explain what went down in the hotel room, “Ms. Fuller is slowly recovering, and when she is recovered enough we will be able to talk to her and find out more about what happened.” Uganda Police Force spokesman Asuman Mugenyi said.

Meanwhile, Fuller’s father is right by her side and is hoping to take her home to South Africa for medical treatment. But, Mugenyi indicated Fuller might not be allowed to go home soon because she tested positive for cocaine, she likely broke Uganda’s drug laws.

The whole story is quite bizarre and still no one knows exactly what happened. Just because they did find cocaine in their system, doesn’t necessarily mean that it was a simple overdose. Addiction specialist Nicholas Kardaras told the New York Post that an overdose of cocaine in the stomach would most likely be from forced ingestion or a smuggling operation gone bad.

It is clear that officials in Uganda seem to think that there was no foul play, “There was no struggle. These were two people in their room and there was not a single sign of struggle. Not even a single bruise on Rice’s body.” Mugenyi said.

Friends of Rice are not so quick to believe the reports, though. “I don’t know exactly what to think about what happened to Jeff. I hear conflicting reports coming out of the region.” Rice’s friend Josh Gates said.
