It's a battle to see which of the artists make it to the finals next week on Work Of Art: The Next Great Artist.
Simon greets the artists at their apartment and tells them they will be taking a train to Cold Spring, NY, where they will meet China for their next challenge. It's a double elimination night, as the top three will be going into the finals next week.
The challenge this week they must find a resident of Cold Spring and make a portrait worthy of sending them into the final. They have two hours to explore the town to find their person and idea for the portrait and all of the next day to work on it.
The artists hit the town running and none of them seem to be having any luck until Dusty finds a little girl to use as his portrait...cute girl.
Kymia meets some storeowners and is going to recreate their first date in a portrait. Lola finds some owners at a coin collecting shop and decides to use them.
Young spends an hour and a half talking with an owner of a bed and breakfast, but to no avail of using for the challenge. Sara meets some firefighters and uses them for her piece. Young finds an artist at his studio and pays him to paint a portrait of himself and uses that interaction between the two of them as his piece.
The artists get some sleep for the night, before heading to the studio to work for the day. Dusty will be using candy to make a portrait of the little girl he met. He is worried about having time, since he will be placing thousands of M&M's to create the portrait.
Simon comes in for his studio visit and he is worried about Dusty's portrait and it something he has done before, so Dusty is working on changing it. Simon likes Sara's portrait of the firefighter and using products he has used his whole life. Positive words for Young, but then a bad review for Kymia as he says her portrait is very conventional. Simon is worried about Lola's piece because she is not using a picture of the coin collectors in her piece.
Dusty decides to change his portrait and do something different. He goes with using a fortuneteller pieces, but then that doesn't work as he runs out of time and goes back to the original piece. They finish for the night and spend some time hanging out before two people get sent home the next day.
The artists come in and finish up their pieces before the gallery show today. Time to meet the judges: China, Jerry, Bill and special guest judge contemporary painter, Richard Phillips. Time for the show and the people from Cold Spring are in attendance to see the final piece. Dusty's piece has some of the M&M's falling off, but the judges seem to like that.
Time for the artists to defend their pieces to the judges. For Dusty, the judges seemed to like the M&M's falling off, so Lola tries to argue that it wasn't planned and it should be a bad thing. Lola's piece is questioned and she breaks down crying as she fights to get a spot in the finals. Mixed reviews for Sara and Young, but positive reviews for Kymia.
The judges meet to discuss all the portraits before announcing the winner of the challenger, which is Kymia. Nothing for the victory, but she is guaranteed a spot in the finale. The next person who has earned a spot in the finale is Young. That leaves Sara, Lola and Dusty with only one spot left in the finals. Dusty and Lola are sent home, which means Sara will be in the finals.
