The Sing Off Season 3

by Todd Betzold

It's rock and country night for the Top 6 groups left on The Sing Off, as they each take on some of the greatest hits from the rock ‘n' roll and country genre.

The groups start out with an inspiring group number before we get started into the rock ‘n' roll part of the night and my new recent fave, Pentatonix, singing "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf. They moved on my list of favorites with that performance. They are so good, especially with only five members. The bass was so good and the sound effects...awesome job!

Looking to be the first college group to win The Sing Off, the Dartmouth Aires take on "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister for their rock ‘n' roll song. This was fun and energetic, but it lost the rock feel to the song, unlike Pentatonix. They were entertaining, as always, but I just didn't feel it like I normally do with them.

My original favorite, Afro-Blue, is up next and is taking on "American Girl" by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. It was an alright performance...they've been losing me the last few weeks. They can sign and have good performers, but I feel the other groups have been overshadowing them.

Delilah came back strong last week and are now ready to keep that momentum going strong as they sing "Dream On" by Aerosmith. Amy was back up front for the whole song and I loved it. This was rock ‘n' roll and they did a strong performance.

The last couple weeks the girls have been called out on their lack of confidence. Can they bring it out tonight when they sing "Here I Go Again" by White Snake? They made this song their own...the rapping part was amazing. It was a big chance they took, but I fell in love with it. The girls did a strong job.

Last up with their rock ‘n' roll song, Vocal Point hits the stage singing "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks. They started back at school this week of the show, so have not had much time singing together as a group...will it show? It was an amazing last note they hit, but besides that I wasn't feeling it. I just feel they were trying too much.

Now it is time for some country songs with the Dartmouth Aires kick it off singing "Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy" by Big & Rich. This was fun and this group does well putting on a show when they hit the stage. They keep you entertained, which is the point of a capella, so good job.

Singing one of my favorite songs, "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum, Afro-Blue could win me back in a huge way next. And that is just what they did...this was pure and simple and raw and I loved it. Great vocals and hit the message of the song so well...excellent.

The rappers are going country when Urban Method sings "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood. Remember when the judges said the girls lacked confidence? Yeah, that is long gone. The girls, especially Katie, worked that out and did a great job on vocals...no rapping on this one, but it wasn't need when the girls kicked booty.

The girls of Delilah take the stage singing "If I Die Young" by The Band Perry. The judges have commented a lot tonight about having emotion in the song and making it a better performance with emotion in it...to me, they missed that mark. Being an emotional song, I felt like they missed a huge opportunity. I think they sung it well, but just didn't connect to the emotional side of things.

Vocal Point gets back up on the stage singing "Life Is A Highway" by Rascal Flatts. It started out slow for me, but they kicked it in and I enjoyed it. The boys can entertain...don't ever doubt that.

This could be the clincher for Pentatonix to officially win me over as my favorite, singing one of my faves, "Stuck Like Glue" by Sugarland. This was good and cute, but not as big as I would have hoped. They made it sound more reggae and I wasn't feeling it. I liked it, but wanted more.

Now time for the judges to send one group home. The first four safe are: Pentatonix, Urban Method, Dartmouth Aires and Vocal Point. That leaves Afro-Blue and Delilah, with one of them going home. Afro-Blue will be coming back for at least one more week, which means Delilah will be headed home.

The Sing-Off airs Mondays at 8/7c on NBC.
