The Amazing Race 19

by David McAlpine

Last night on The Amazing Race, teams took to the streets of rural Indonesia from a more urbanized Yogyakarta for a leg full of bikes and buckets and Buddhas (oh my!). It was a leg absent of any "equalizers" but packed with action as it was unclear until the very last minute who was going home.

We find out (not surprisingly) that Cindy has had Ernie's you-know-what in a very tight vice for the past six months because she wants to win this race. Bad. We're talking exercise, intensive language classes, geography lessons, the whole nine yards. No wonder she gets so upset when they screw up, right?

And volcano Cindy started to boil over during the first task, where teams had to bike with a very slow bike patrol to get to their next clue. Ernie's pedal breaks (with no fault to him) and Cindy goes berserk with each passing time. You can see her face screaming, "Failure!" But it goes from funny to annoying in all of two seconds when she gets close to crying.

At the Detour, teams had the choice between two tasks: Rice Field or Grass Fed. In Rice Field, teams had to deliver lunch to rice farmers, then plant 300 rice seedlings for them (in a lot of mud). In Grass Fed, teams had to take bags of grass and sheep to a nearby shed, then fill a trough with water using buckets.

All the teams converged on the Detour at relatively the same time, most of them taking Grass Fed. However, per usual on the race, the sheep were stubborn and people were falling all over the place (including grandma Cathi). Laurence and Zac used double the number of buckets they were supposed to, which the Olympians noted, but kept their mouth shut about.

Marcus and Amani switched from the rice planting to the grass detour, costing them valuable time, but Jeremy and Sandy's car broke down on the way to the Roadblock, leaving them a spot to stick in the competition.

At least, that's what we thought until we saw the Roadblock. It involved going around this giant temple counting Buddhas in various sitting positions. The trick: the teams need to figure out that they need to demonstrate the sitting positions when they count them out.

Laurence and Tommy partnered up and figured it out, pulling ahead of the pack. Laurence and Zac finished first, but got a penalty for using too many buckets, allowing the Olympians to slide into first yet again, getting an all-expenses paid trip to Dubai, and leery eyes from the father-son duo.

Jeremy and Sandy, Justin and Jennifer, Ernie and Cindy and Amani and Marcus all teamed up at the Detour, each taking one of the positions. They finished in that order, leaving the grandparents, the twins and the Vegas showgirls.

Cathi kept yelling at Bill for being much too loud, especially since they were doing it on their own. But they finished next, paving the way for a footrace (a very, very slow one since the teams couldn't run on sacred grounds). In the end, Liz and Marie won out, sending the Vegas showgirls home.

The Amazing Race airs Sundays at 9/8c on CBS.
