Around The World In 80 Ways

by: Todd Betzold

Having already used nine of the 80 ways, what will Boston Rob and Monster Truck's Dennis Anderson use tonight in Around The World In 80 Ways when traveling 450 miles from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Ipanema Beach?

They start tonight's episode on a rooftop 35 floors off the ground in Sao Paulo. Dennis starts out a worried man, but Rob finds scaffolding for washing windows and wants to use that to get down. Rob talks Dennis into using it. On the way down, they decide to stop and wash some windows to make it not look so weird that they used the scaffolding.

They make it down drama-free until they land and a worker comes out of the building and questions what they are doing, but they run away to find their next mode of transportation to get to Rio de Janeiro.

Having no luck finding their next mode, they run into a street protest to legalize marijuana before making their way to a truck stop. There they find a road train, which you don't find in the U.S. very often. It basically is what the name states: a train for the road. It is hauling sugar cane to a plantation, which gets the boys within 50 miles of their destination.

At the plantation, they find a new form of transportation: a combine. Rob convinces the farmer to let them use the combine. They each get their own with a driver in it and decide to race it out, so Dennis can avenge his loss last week at Lake Titicaca. No such luck for Dennis, as Rob pulls ahead for the win right at the very end.

Now it is time for the ostrich farm. Being able to run 20-25 miles per hour, the ostriches can get them closer to Ipanema Beach. The problem though is catching them to ride and when caught, if Dennis can even fit on them to ride.

The farmer then speaks up that they have put harnesses on the ostriches and attached some horse buggies to ride in. The boys get the ostriches all setup and decide to race, yet again, with the loser buying the winner lunch. Dennis' ostrich doesn't want to move at all and Rob gets out to a commanding lead. He never looks back, as Dennis' bird just sat down a tired little bird.

They get back on the ostriches and ride them into town for lunch. They start heading to their destination and on the path they find a handcart. The boys hop on and work together to make their way down the tracks. The ride is simple going downhill, but going uphill is another story. Since Dennis lost the ostrich race, he has to get out and push them up the hills.

Now in Rio de Janeiro, the guys try to find a good place to eat. They pile on the food and beer before heading in for the night to get some rest.

Being well rested, they take off on a rainy day to get to their final destination for this trip. They get set up with a black swan to float their way there, but with the rainy and windy conditions it doesn't work and they abandon ship and head back to beach to find a new mode. They try a jet ski, asking people on beach for rides and a cop for a ride, but no luck.

So, no luck by sea and a new day brings them trying to get there by land. They start out their trek as road line painters, as Rob starts painting the yellow lines along the road as Dennis drives. They proceed to make crooked lines and spill paint all over the road.

They are now on Sugar Loaf Mountain, which stands above Ipanema Beach. It is a gorgeous view! The beach lies 1000 feet below and Rob decides he wants to go down using a hang glider, but Dennis has had enough scares with heights and will walk down. They decide to bet on whom will get to the beach first, with the loser having to get a Brazilian wax.

On the way down, Dennis stops for an ice cream, but proceeds to buy the whole ice cream cart and drives that down the mountain. He seems to be moving along well as Rob floats his way to the beach. Dennis finally wins, as he beats Rob to Ipanema Beach, their final destination. So, looks like a Brazilian wax for Rob!
