Bryce Black from Project Runway Season 9

It's hard enough for the designers of Project Runway to design looks from their own repertoire under severe time constraints. Throw in a batch of (generally) clueless husbands and boyfriends and you've got yourself a mess waiting to happen.

Last night, the remaining nine designers had to create a look for their male client's significant others. While some hit the nail right on the head, others were left swinging blindly. Unfortunately for Bryce Black, his ill-fitting, bright pink dress ended his run on Project Runway. Today, he spoke with RealityWanted about the highs and lows of the competition.

Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: It felt like you really started to open up last night when working with your couple. What was that experience like and how do you think it affected your overall design?
A. Bryce: I think that honestly I was just so homesick and I couldn't focus or even think really on what I was doing. I think that the uncertainty really showed in my design and that I didn't know what to do, so I put everything in there. I think missing my boyfriend really distracted me in the end.

Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: Looking back, do you agree with the judges' critique of your dress or do you think it suited the client well?
A. Bryce: I agree in a lot of ways because it was overdesigned as Nina pointed out. Also, the fit was not good. The reason the fit wasn't good was because I scrapped it last minute and had no more fittings with my client. We decided to do the backless thing so her bra came off and then the fitting was off. There was just so much extra room that was made for a bra with padding. So the two biggest issues were the fit and the over-design.

Q. Lindsay, RealityWanted: Overall, what was the biggest lesson you learned from working on Project Runway? Has this experience changed your perspective as a designer?
A. Bryce: I'm really thankful for Project Runway for teaching me how to work quickly and how to work under stressful conditions. There was nothing preparing me for that world. It really taught me a lot about myself and what I'm capable of doing. I'm still growing as a designer, I just graduated from college in March. There's nowhere to go but up.

Q. What originally made you want to be a fashion designer?
A. Bryce: I just really enjoy dressing people and styling people. I like fixing color and texture and when I was in high school, I used to pick up magazines and go through the fashion ads. I just love the fantasy. This whole fantasy world when you get to design fashion, that really drove me to do this.

Q. Bert's been a really controversial figure this season. What are your thoughts on him?
A. Bryce: For a while, I really had a hard time with Bert because he was always saying things under his breath, but towards the end he really grew on me. He was really there for me a few times and was really sweet.

Q. You said you were feeling homesick. Tell us more about that.
A. Bryce: I have this really great support system back home - my boyfriend, my mother and I have great friends. When you're on the show, you get separated from that and you're in a different world with people who don't care for you like that. You're put in these situations and you don't get to choose the contestants yourself. Everyone wants you to go home so they can be the last man standing. It's hard to be separated for so long.

Q. Is there anything you would have done differently on the show?
A. Bryce: I wish I would have really stuck to my guns and done what I do best. I work a lot with denim and I only did that once. I wish I stuck to who I am as a designer and not let the competition get the best of me. You see how my confidence is down and when I watched the show, I was like, "That's not me."
