The Bachelorette Season 7: Episode 9 Recap

The Bachelorette

by David McAlpine

Last night on The Bachelorette, it was fantasy suite time when Ashley took the final three to the usual exotic locale. This season, it's Fiji at some very lush, very large island-themed resort, and she's loving it.

Ashley lands in Fiji and she's excited that this is the place where she will be getting engaged (hopefully) in just a matter of days. Ben is her goofy guy, Constantine is the sensible one and JP is the hottie--who will Ashley choose?

Ashley is all fine and dandy, looking out on the ocean, drinking some kind of tropical refreshment, thinking about the upcoming dates when, out of nowhere (even though it's happened in almost every season before this), someone is back, ready to take her heart. The desperado: Ryan, whose "I really want you to meet my family" schtick prompted Ashley to kick him out the door.

Ryan pleads Ashley to take him back, because once he got back to work, he couldn't stop thinking about her. Ashley is just as happy to see Ryan as she would be to see someone needing to get a root canal, but she hides it well enough. Ultimatum: Ryan gets to stay in Fiji and Ashley gets to think being with him over. That's codeword for ABC is trying to get us to watch until she dumps Ryan. Again.

Ben and Ashley head out on a boat for a cruise. Some sexual suntan lotion rubbing ensues, and Ben and Ashley are ready to rock. But they have to wait until after dinner to get to some slap and tickle. According to Ben, he's more available and on his way to "I love you." To me, "on his way" wouldn't be good enough, but Ashley is over his shoulder in a heartbeat.

Constantine is next, playing off of Ashley's "Greek god" comment. Now really, I think she needs to open up a dictionary, because her definition of  Greek god and the normal definition don't match. Just because Constantine is Greek doesn't make him wonderful off the bat (ask much as I would love to believe it does, too).

However, Constantine is noncommittal. He is the picture perfect definition of scared: apparently he had to look at 108 houses before he picked one. But Constantine says houses are not like women, and that he's totally down to commit now. Cue skepticism from Ashley (well-deserved skepticism, I might add).

The skepticism carries over to dinner, where, after a long, boring conversation, Ashley proposes that they go to the fantasy suite. Constantine's response: I have too much respect for you to do this without 110% loving you. After five dates, that's a fair assessment. Ashley's response to something that might be considered sweet and endearing? Ripping up the Fantasy Suite card and letting the pieces fall to the floor. Ouch.

Back to Ryan, who's been waiting this entire time. Long story short, she's feeling good about JP and Ben, so she doesn't need a third to add to the mix (as if she's going to find something great). With that, Ryan is sent packing from Fiji, only a free island vacation richer.

Ashley is super happy to see JP after seeing two guys she's not too into, but she says she doesn't want to play into anyone's competitiveness. Too late, Ashley, that's kind of what you get when you're on a reality-competition show. The Bachelorette may not have been nominated for an Emmy, but have you *seen* the show before?

Regardless, it's not too long before JP and Ashley are off to the Fantasy Suite to do a little boom boom of their own.

Some chat time with Chris Harrison, it's just Ashley, JP and Ben. They're wondering what's going on, and Ashley says not so coyly that they're the final two. Although it's obvious they feel proud of themselves, the moment only lasts a minute because now it's do-or-die: put a ring on it, or don't.
