Jackie barely had the chance to pack her bags on Platinum Hit before Jewel immediately threw another songwriting challenge at the remaining contestants. Working in pairs, they have to write as many hooks as they can in two hours. Any genre, any style. They won't find out why, though, until the next morning.
The teams are: Jes and Scotty, Johnny and Nick, and Sonyae and Brian. It seemed that Sonyae and Brian would be the strongest team in terms of working together and banging out hooks but an hour in, they haven't even completed one!
The next day, everyone is sent to meet with Evan "Kidd" Bogart, a BMI songwriter, for a pitch meeting. He starts asking for things like an uptempo song for a male pop artist or something for a strong, female, soulful voice. They had to pitch right then and right there, prepared or not.
The hook that they pitched is the song that they'll have to turn into a complete song. There is no winner - yet. Jes and Scotty end up writing a song that Justin Bieber could sing, Sonyae and Brian write for Beyonce, and Nick and Johnny write for Gavin Degraw, who just happened to be there for the hook challenge.
Feeling like Johnny completely took over during the songwriting session, Nick has an absolute meltdown. He storms out of the studio, screams and swears in the apartment, and refuses to get on board and work with his partner. Looks like Johnny will be performing alone.
Scotty and Jes came together to show a song for a maturing Bieber that was definitely catchy. Sonyae and Brian tried to take what Beyonce has done to a different place but that's exactly what it felt like - a different thing than what Beyonce does. Johnny's song sounded like Gavin could sing it, but it was a song that would be part of an albun perhaps and not a hit single. While he performed, Nick went back and forth between sulking on the couch and laughing at the song.
Well, just because I didn't like the song for Beyonce doesn't mean the judges agreed. In fact, Sonyae and Brian are the winners of this week's challenge. Kidd even said he'd feel comfortable playing that for Beyonce. Scotty and Jes are safe while (surprise, surprise) Johnny and Nick find themselves in the bottom.
As the two are grilled about what went wrong in the song, they just attacked each other. Nick called Johnny a dirtbag and other names that I can't write here. Keith called the song "a lyrical cesspool" and Kara tells them that they've shown their ugliest sides.
After talking it over, the judges decide to keep Nick and send Johnny packing. The shock is evident on Johnny's face - as well as everyone else's. Nick's final words of the night are that it's fine if no one likes him... except once this is all over, who will want to write with him?
