In the second episode of Platinum Hit, Jewel delivered the next challenge: create a hook that could pack a dance floor. The top three will get to record a full length version of their song. To help with judging, the show called in the big gun - Miss Donna Summer!
After the songwriters perform their hooks, Donna names the winners. Scotty comes in third, Karen comes in second (even though she screamed the whole time), and Brian came in first. Really? The remake of "I'm Too Sexy" takes it all? I was expecting Nick, Jes, or Jackie to be in there somewhere.
Speaking of Nick, he didn't take losing very well, cursing, pouting, and moaning. Well, the self-proclaimed next Michael Jackson didn't earn any popularity points.
The finished club tracks will be played on a live dance floor so that L.A. clubgoers can give their feedback and they're notoriously critical.
The teams are: Brian, Jes, and Jackie; Karen, Blessing, Amber, and Johnny; and Scotty, Nick, Melissa, and Sonyae. Then, Jewel throws a curveball and asks the teams to use a new track for their songs for no reason whatsoever other to be difficult.
Karen's group definitely does not seem to be jiving. She's too G-rated, Blessing isn't contributing anything, and the others aren't stepping in to take over. Over in Brian's group, Jackie and Jes convince him that a female needs to sing the chorus in order for the song to work. Despite the personality conflicts in Scotty's group, they come together to write a pretty
catchy track.
At panel, Scotty is named the winner of the dance floor challenge, which is a nice step up from last week's rough start. Brian's group is safe, even though the girls were told they made a mistake by jumping onto the vocals of his song. That leaves Karen in last, with Donna Summer calling it "stock" and "mundane". Blessing makes a mistake, saying that his experience is more in jazz and big band, which makes the panel question why he didn't bring that to the table. Yet, Karen was responsible for a large part of that song.
Ultimately, the judges decide that Blessing contributed the least and he was eliminated from the competition. Will you be downloading any of this week's songs on iTunes?
