Rich Leist from Fear Factor

This week, it was announced that Fear Factor will be returning to NBC after six years of being off the air. Today, RealityWanted talked to producer Rich Leist, who also works on Wipeout and 101 Ways To Leave A Game Show, and got the scoop on the return of a reality favorite!

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How did the decision come about to bring Fear Factor back?
A. Rich: I mean, we left six years ago. It had been off the air but the popularity, in reruns, was still there. When we left, we had syndication; we were on 172 times in a week.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What will be different or new to the viewers the second time around?
A. Rich: It's gonna be the same Fear Factor. It will have more updated stunts, more action, probably the same as far as being gross... maybe a little less. Just with the updated technology, you're going to get an in depth perspective when it comes to stunts.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: The show's casting website says you're looking for teams of two. What do pairs bring to the table, as opposed to solo players?
A. Rich: With pairs, you get a lot more interaction with your other person. Whether it's your wife, brother, best friend, you get more of an interaction with each other. It's like the concept of... if you're going to a party, you want to bring a guest. You want to bring somebody with you. Also, you have someone who can carry the team or someone who can bring you down.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What are you looking for in a good Fear Factor contestant?
A. Rich: I mean, everyone says it but it's all about personality. It's what you have. It's how you carry yourself. We look for people who are very charismatic, who can talk out their feelings and talk about what's going on. We want someone who can walk into a party and everybody wants to talk to them.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What's the biggest mistake people make when applying for the show that turns you off to them?
A. Rich: They come in and try to be what they think we want. They put on a front of what they saw on another show. They've been watching The Real World and they're like, "I'm totally that guy." We want someone who says, "I'm totally me," rather than someone they saw on Survivor last night. We see right through that. Our job is to eye the real person as opposed to the person who is acting. You may think you're a good actor but you're not going to win an award for your performance in a casting interview.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Any word on a host for Fear Factor yet?
A. Rich: No word on a host yet.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When can fans and viewers expect the show to air?
A. Rich: There's been no official word but we're looking at this fall.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Is there anything else people need to know about casting for the show?
A. Rich: People can read about the posting on realitywanted or go to fearfactorcasting.com. There's going to be more updates coming up. We want to make sure that we keep our fans up to date and to have fun with the show. The great part, also, is that when we left, there were a lot of kids who watched and wanted to be on it. Now, they're old enough. It's 18 and up and now - they can actually be on it.
