Dancing With the Stars Season 11

By Kristal Bailey

Tonight the battle for the mirror-ball trophy is in the final chapter. After another shocking elimination last week, the finalists are Jennifer Grey, Bristol Palin, and Kyle Massey. Each contestant does a redemption routine and a freestyle. The redemption dance is the style of dance that they got their lowest scores in, while the freestyle is a dance routine in whatever style of the contestants choosing. No pressure, but whoever has the best freestyle usually ends up winning the show.

Celebrity: Kyle Massey
Professional Partner:  Lacey Schwimmer

Dance: Foxtrot

Breakdown: Len stopped by to help Kyle with his technique, particularly with his feet and toe points. They’re first foxtrot was a 70s inspired routine that did not gel with the judges; now’s their chance to get it right! Len considers the foxtrot one of the most difficult ballroom routines and he has gone from messy to marvelous since the first foxtrot. Bruno noticed a marked improvement loved that he was able to keep up the performance while improving his footwork. However, Carrie Ann thinks he could do better. She could see him thinking about his step which held back his performance from the usual enthusiastic level.

Scores: Carrie Ann: 9 Len: 9 Bruno: 9

Total: 27/30

Dance: Freestyle

Breakdown: Their routine was a lot of fun! Hip Hop with touches of ballroom made for a very energetic performance that perfectly suited Kyle Massey’s personality and enthusiasm. Len thought it was great entertainment and he thoroughly enjoyed it even though it’s not his style of choice. Bruno called it “explosive entertainment.” Carrie Ann dubbed him “The Fresh Prince of Dancing With the Stars” and loved his energy. One thing that Kyle has been consistent in week after week in his energy, and this was the perfect routine for that!

Scores: Carrie Ann: 10 Len: 9 Bruno: 10

Total: 29/30

Celebrity: Bristol Palin
Professional Partner:  Mark Ballas

Dance: Jive

Breakdown: Bristol’s lasting until the finale is definitely a hot button issue and Bristol came out ready to prove that she deserves to be here. Bruno loved it, especially her bright and bubbly performance. Carrie Ann didn’t think she could get better than her Paso, but this blew her away! If her toes had been pointed a bit more, it could have been perfect. Len noted that she just went from “Gorilla to thriller” in the Jive.

Scores: Carrie Ann: 9 Len: 9 Bruno: 9

Total: 27/30

Dance: Freestyle

Breakdown: Bristol had a rough week after the backlash from Brandy’s departure from the show before her. They chose a very iconic routine from the musical, Chicago. Bruno commended her on aiming so high, but thought ultimately she fell short. Carrie Ann was so impressed that she danced in a cage; my how she has grown since the start of the show! Len agrees that it is hard to separate it from the stage show and movie, but he did and thought it was a strong routine.

Scores: Carrie Ann: 8 Len: 9 Bruno: 8

Total: 25/ 30 (52/60 for the night)

Celebrity: Jennifer Grey
Professional Partner:  Derek Hough

Dance: Paso Doble

Breakdown: Their Paso during Rock Week was really the only dip that they’ve had in this competition. While Jennifer is already a solid dancer, Carrie Ann helped her add some finesse to her movements. Len was so impressed with their routine, he gave a standing ovation and said it was simply fantastic. Carrie Ann and Bruno were equally impressed. While Jennifer has been the frontrunner this entire season, it’ll be interesting to see if America agrees with the judges.

Scores: Carrie Ann: 10 Len: 10 Bruno: 10

Total: 30/30

Dance: Freestyle

Breakdown: Calling back to her Dirty Dancing star-making role, they played off the iconic scene with the watermelon and her introduction to the concept of dirty dancing. Len calls her a juggernaut, heading for the mirror ball trophy. Bruno commended her for her versatility: she danced two dances on opposite ends of the spectrum and killed both of them.

Scores: Carrie Ann: 10 Len: 10 Bruno: 10

Total: 30/30 (60/60 for the night)

Jennifer Grey is perfect on the night and at the top of the leader board. Bristol is again at the bottom. After her two routines, it’s hard to imagine Jennifer Grey not taking the trophy. But since half the decision is left to America, be sure you tune into the remaining final performances and live elimination tomorrow to find out who dances to the top.

Watch the final show tomorrow on ABC at 9/8 c.
