Not everyone can make it work all the time. Last night on Project Runway, the designers met New York City’s very own, Mayor Bloomberg, who gave them the challenge to create a look inspired by anything in New York City. While April did design a cool aesthetic, it was nothing we haven’t seen before by her. The judges got tired of her reused design and sent the budding young designer packing. Today, April talked with RealityWanted and reporters and a conference call about her experiences on the show.
Q. What was your experience being the youngest on the show?
A. April: In the beginning it was a topic with Valerie thinking that I was not capable. I think later on, as I went through challenges I proved people wrong, so I think I proved to a lot of people that I was a lot more mature than some of the other people on the show or that they thought I would be. As far as getting to Fashion Week, maybe it was just a story line and I wasn’t enough of a character as they need for that story line? It could be a lot of different reasons though.
Q. You spent the first two week in the bottom two and then slowly started working your way up. A lot of competitors said that they were more exhausted as they went on, but this didn’t seem like it happened to you. Was there any reason for that?
A. April: I think I just wanted it more and more and kept going for it, and got more and more motivated as the challenges came up and I just took the challenge and I think I delivered and I think that is why I was escalating. And I think all of a sudden the judges decided it was time for me to go.
Q. Your looks were critiqued for all sort of looking like each other. Do you think your looks were all a cohesive collection or were you making the same looks over and over?
A. April: I can see where they are saying that I am pulling elements, maybe, but that is just my aesthetic. A person like me stays so true to myself, and using all the same color I want it to look like it’s my collection. That is how designers design collections and I think just being there that whole six weeks was me being stuck in this collection. I don’t think that I created the same garment, for sure.
Q. Did you feel vindicated by Tim saying your outfit this week was a high note to go out on?
A. April: Yes definitely. I didn’t agree with them sending me home, and I know a lot of America doesn’t agree with that. I obviously thought it was a great piece and I stand by that, and I would rather go home for something that I thoroughly really loved doing and that was something that was really me, than a BS something that was pink just because it was the color they wanted to see.
Q. Who would you like to see win the competition?
A. April: I would like to see Mondo win it.
