Big Brother 12

by David McAlpine

Last time on Big Brother, the houseguests entered the house for the first time. Upon entering the house, they discovered a twist that would shake the house for the summer: the saboteur. This person's mission is to make it to the halfway point of the game, all the while sabotaging various housemates. He or she struck for the first time by locking the storage room, forcing the entire house to go on slop.

Picking up from Day 1, everyone wants to know who the saboteur is because, clearly, it's in their best interest to get that person out. Andrew draws a lot of suspicion because, when the lights came back on, he was right near the storage room door. Brendon is also under fire for being away from the couches. Kathy is just freaking out unnecessarily, much to the annoyance of this viewer.

Enzo starts the first of many conversations about who the perp is, and tries to get on Andrew's good side (probably because he's safe this week). In turn, Enzo starts pointing the finger at Brendon. The girls are sitting around saying the same thing: Brendon is the main suspect, although Andrew is suspicious, too.

Hayden gets his moment in the sun with the HoH room, which is hidden behind a swanky, black velvet rope. We get our first look into the HoH room and it's very blue and very contemporary. Ragan makes the clever observation that none of the pictures show Hayden as a "bro," which, honestly, surprised me as well, but it's cool to know that he's a nice guy.

Out in the backyard, Brendon, Rachel and Annie are chilling in the hammock. Brandon decides he can trust those two, so he tells them about his Master's in applied physics and his upcoming Ph.D. in physics. Rachel, the "chemist," (am I the only one who notices that she's still billed as a VIP cocktail waitress?), gets all hot because the hot guy loves science. Meanwhile, Annie is the awkward third wheel. She even goes so far as to say it's like watching her parents have sex…gross.

Hayden gathers people in the HoH and they're all pointing the finger at Andrew and Brendon. Matt points out that Andrew is safe and they can't do anything to him, anyway, and he also presents the idea of it being a woman. From that, Hayden draws a plan to target a woman this week and a man the next.

Back to Brendon and Rachel, who are making lovy-dovy faces in the hot tub. Hayden sees and automatically, those two are targeted (as if Brendon hasn't done enough already to make himself stand out). Enzo takes the opportunity to make an alliance here: himself, Hayden, Matt and Lane. So the four stake out in Hayden's HoH and commit the first cardinal sin of alliance-making: they pick a name.

Of course, Enzo can't help but come up with a brilliant name (wait for it...): The Brigade. In addition, everyone gets their own name: Hayden is the "Animal," Lane is the "Beast," Matt is the "Brains," and Enzo himself is "Meow Meow." Wow folks, I think we hit a new low here.

Then it was the first "Have/Have Not" competition of the season, where the house divided themselves up into 3 teams of 4: Ragan, Kathy, Matt and Rachel vs. Britney, Lane, Monet and Enzo vs. Annie, Brendon, Kristen and Andrew. Hayden comes out dressed as a fairy (insert Ragan joke here) and explains the competition: each person has to crawl through a pit of carmel and dig through a giant vat of popcorn to find a "tooth." The first two teams to find 8 teeth win the luxury of being "Have"s for the week. As a consolation prize, everyone gets to pull Kathy out of the caramel, almost like Greenpeace helping a beached whale. Sad, but beautiful at the same time.

It starts off neck-and-neck, but green slowly pulls ahead, thanks to the slow work of Britney and Kathy. On Kathy's second go-around (everyone had to go twice), she got plain stuck as everyone else passed her. The green team finished first, sailing to victory, while the pink team finished second, thanks to Enzo's quick thinking to help Britney spend as little time as possible on the course.

As a result of Blue losing, Ragan, Rachel, Kathy and Matt are spending the week on slop, taking cold showers and sleeping in the "Have Not" bedroom, which is worse than any of us could imagine. It looks like a broken down shack on the bayou, the beds are rusting chaise lounges, and there are jars of worms and maggots in the rooms creating a stench. Everyone else gets to partake in the boltcutting of the lock and access to food for the week.

After all this goes down, Kathy tells Britney about how much she sucks because she had to have Enzo help her in the competition. Her point was that Britney didn't need to dig through all the popcorn, so she could use her energy to get through the caramel. Britney wasn't having it and snapped back, defending her ability to get through the caramel, since Kathy couldn't.

In the middle of the night, the Saboteur strikes again, putting tape over Kathy and Britney's pictures on the memory wall. Britney gets upset and goes to talk to Hayden about the nominations, worried that the Saboteur is trying to get her put up.

At the nomination ceremony, Hayden sends a clear message that he's threatened by the showmance in the house by nominating Brendon and Rachel. Secretly, he's targeting who he thinks is the Saboteur, but he's also trying to take out what he sees as a strong alliance come down the road. And the hunt for the Saboteur continues…

Tune in to Big Brother on Tuesday at 10/9c to see who wins the first Power of Veto and if it's used on either Brendon or Rachel, only on CBS!
