Double Exposure

Last night, on the new show Double Exposure, we get an inside look at fashion and celebrity photography. The show follows Markus Klinko, the self-proclaimed James Bond of fashion photography, and Indrani, a model turned photographer, that work exclusively as a duo. They may be opposites in every way, but they always get their shot.

Markus and Indrani are a one of kind creative duo. They met in 1994 and started dating, but that ended after 8 years. Even though their romantic relationship ended, they stayed together as photographers. When they both love an image, they know more people will since they're so opposite. They also have GK Reid as their head fashion stylist and anywhere from 3 to 12 assistants at one time.

For the first shot of the show, they worked with rapper/actress Eve for Women's Health Magazine. The tensions are high with arguments between Markus and Indrani, missing assistants, and botched lighting setups. Photography is all about trying to go to an extreme, but it's challenging to get celebrities to go there.

"The real essence of what we do is we are professional seducers. It's about turning people on and making them aroused. Wow, I want to look like that, I want to look cool."

After the arguments settle and sets are ready, Markus notices one of Eve's entourage shooting the same pictures. Markus couldn't continue with that other photographer, delaying the whole shoot, while Eve was already tired from her red eye flight and the long day of shooting. While he has a valid point, he went about it too harshly. It delayed the shoot and nearly caused an argument.

They got four great shots of Eve: crouched, against a white wall with natural light, in a world patterned dress, and sitting down in a purple dress. My favorite shot was the one of Eve in the world dress; she looked fun, sexy, and strong.

For their next shoot, they traveled to Los Angeles and immediately got in another argument. Markus got a Presidential Suite, while Indrani got a regular room. 15 years of baggage came up during this argument. She wasn't credited for the first 4 years of the partnership, he always gets the bigger room, she feels like she's always seen as a lesser photographer than him, etc.

For this shoot, they're at one of Frank Lloyd Wright's building that looks like an Incan temple for Kai Kuhne, a high end German fashion designer. He wants the photos to convey that the women that wear Kai's clothes have the power of the Incans.

They got 3 solid shots: a stoic shot outside in a beige dress, a striped dress in the hall, and the tricky shot in a sequined dress in the pool.

After the initial planned shots, they decided to do one last daring location - on the edge of the building. The model has to go out on the ledge outside the building while both Markus and Indrani shoot from two angles, below from the street and from the building.

Unfortunately, the model has a fear of heights and it's a struggle to get her out far enough for the shot. Meanwhile, the sun is setting and every second they're losing the lighting needed for this shot. Amazingly, they get two shots in the last seconds of light!

In the end, Markus got Indrani a suite like his. He learned from their fight and is working on trying to keep Indrani happy so their partnership can thrive. This is how they've been able to stay creative partners even after their relationship ended.
