American Idol Season 9

By Lindsay Strouse

It’s getting down to the wire, and this week America has chosen American Idol’s 2010 Top 10. The chosen ten will make up this year’s American Idol Tour. After last night’s performances with advice from mentor Miley Cyrus, some contestants should be feeling pretty comfortable while others should be sweating out the 58 minutes it takes to announce who is going home.

The show opens with the Top 11 performing WHAM!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.” Seriously, WHAT is it with this show picking the corniest songs from the past twenty or thirty years? I have to admit though, it was kind of hilarious watching Crystal Bowersox sing a song like this.

Next up is the Ford commercial. The group sings Plain White T’s “Our Time Now” and plays with colored bouncy balls in a fountain. When they drive off, we see Andrew Garcia left behind in the ball pit. Could this be a sign?

Ryan Seacrest prolongs giving out the results a little bit more by having the contestants tell a little bit about what is going on in their lives. We find out Siobhan’s boss has made a pledge to not shave his beard until she wins. I hope he doesn’t work in a business setting.

Finally, the lights dim so we know it’s time for results. It’s no surprise the first person to find out they are safe is screamin’ Siobhan Magnus. Next two to find out they are safe are Lee DeWyze and Casey James. Teenage heartthrobs—we get it. Next two on the chopping block are Tim Urban and Paige Miles. I’m crossing my fingers America will get it right this time…and they do! Both are in the bottom three this week.

Before more results are given, Miley Cyrus performs her newest hit, “When I Look At You.” Okay, you’re performing on American Idol, you don’t need to wear a dress that is a cross between a wedding dress and a prom dress. Come on, now. And to be perfectly honest, I don’t think her performance was that good. Good choice on mentors, guys. After the performance, she claims that this is her first standing ovation ever and that she loved Tim’s cheesy High School Musical knee slide. Is it a commercial break yet?

Back to some results. Both Aaron Kelly and Didi Benami are safe to join the Top 10. When Didi says she doesn’t know what people want from her, the judges unanimously agree she just needs to make a good song choice for once. Next up is new daddy, Michael Lynche. After his performance last night, I’m not surprised he’s staying for another week. After Big Mike sits down, Crystal Bowersox stands to find out her fate. If you ask me, she’s getting a little too arrogant—whatdayaknow, she’s safe for another week.

The last two to find out whether they are staying in the Top 10 are Katie Stevens and Andrew Garcia. Looks like the Ford commercial foreshadowed wrong—Andrew is safe and Katie joins the bottom 3 with Tim and Paige. She’s not in the red for long though. As soon as she meets them center stage, Ryan takes her out of her misery and sends her right back over to the safety zone.

Paige and Tim have to sweat it out a little longer for Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas to perform. Tonight is just a night for the teeny boppers, I guess. However, I was actually really impressed by their duet and liked the song and performance. Good job, Disney Channel stars!

Now that we’ve finally reached the last 5 minutes, we find out who is going home—and it’s Paige. Don’t ask me why, but I have a feeling she won’t be saved. Before she even sings her song, Simon announces that she won’t be saved no matter how well she signs: all the judges agree. Ouch.

Don’t miss American Idol next Wednesday, March 30 at 8/7c on Fox when the Top 10 contestants sing R&B and Soul music with mentor Usher. This should be interesting.
