The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Ruins

by Matt Anaya

Finally, the moment we have all been waiting for … the finale to the MTV Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Ruins

We have seen a lot this season, including fights and backstabbing between friends, a love triangle, a shy girl’s emergence as a force (Sarah), Tonya, Veronica, and Katie being Tonya, Veronica, and Katie, and my personal favorite - a popped breast implant.

Seriously, the popped breast implant has to be a top ten MTV Challenge moment as well as the infamous brawl between Darrell’s right fist and Brad’s face.

This week’s episode was boring until the final challenge, which was actually very exciting and I cannot remember the last time I had no idea who was going to win until the very end.

Kudos to the MTV producers as they did a very good job of keeping the drama alive.

Heading into the final challenge the Champs were very confident and they should have been. They had Evan, Kenny, Johnny, Derrick and Susie who are all proven beasts in this game, hence the name the Champs.

The Challengers featured only two girls as their team was completely decimated by the end of the season. Sarah and KellyAnne were the only competitors left on the Challengers and they had a fighting chance; but as always, there was strength in numbers.

The race for $300K started as both teams got off to a running start and hit the first checkpoint.

The first checkpoint featured something every competitive reality show loves to do, make their competitors eat vile disgusting food.

The Bizarre Buffet made everyone vomit, which makes for great reality television, and the Challengers got off to a surprisingly large early lead.

Sarah and KellyAnne reached the second checkpoint well ahead of the Champs and it was a jigsaw puzzle the Challengers finished in no time.

At this point the Champs are starting to get scared but not panicking, which was important, but I was in complete shock how far the girls were ahead.

The Champs got lost on the way to the jigsaw puzzle but kept their focus and maintained a steady pace and the girls started to wear down by the time the third checkpoint was reached.

The mudpit wore the girls down and, although one checkpoint ahead, they met the Champs at a balance beam maze. The Champs blew the Challengers away at the bamboo maze and ran through the mudpit in no time to eventually catch up to the Challengers at the final checkpoint, a baffling puzzle that completely befuddled the Challengers.

Susie, the girl who was the least important to Bananas and his teammates, figured out the nearly impossible puzzle and the Champs won the $300K to split amongst themselves.

KellyAnne and Sarah would eventually make it to the end but both were exhausted and if you ask me, Sarah surprisingly out performed KellyAnne in the finale.

It was a fun season in Thailand and this was a very fun cast even without my man CT. There was so much strategy involved this season that a lot of players could not take the frustrations and it wore them down, namely Brad and Dunbar.

MTV does a great job every season to think of new ways to keep people watching and it also involves casting crazy people. The cast makes the show enjoyable and MTV does a great job of producing the show, creating drama, and keeping viewers’ attention.

See you next time!
