The Amazing Race 21

by Gina Scarpa

Natalie and Nadiya, fresh off of their first place victory, kick off the third leg of The Amazing Race in Indonesia. All teams are headed to Antika Jaya Pandang Restaurant, where a Road Block awaits them, but Lexi and Trey are the first to arrive. One team member must serve a meal Pandang style, which means that they must carry 20 plates at once, without dropping anything. Chippendales James is able to complete the task first, followed by Ryan, and then Lexi.

From there, it's on to the Surabaya Gubeng train station to the town of Bangil and during their ride, they'll have to find a clue. The twins fell behind early on in the leg, then missed the first train, which put them hours behind the front of the pack. Don't tell me they're going to have use their Express Pass already! On their way to Bangil, Abbie and Ryan, Trey and Lexi, Josh and Brent, and Jaymes and James make a pact not to U-Turn each other later on in the leg. Meanwhile, James and Abba are not part of this plan, because they chose to sit separately from the group. It seems these two are planning on running their own race, and not team up with others, this season.

In Bangil, teams face a Detour and the choices are Egg Head or Lion's Head. In Egg Head, teams must hold a coconut over their head, have it lit on fire, wait while eggs cook on top of it, then eat those eggs topped with lots of hot sauce. In Lion's Head, teams join a Japanese procession, dressing in costumes and wearing a mask that weighs over 40lbs. Along the way, they have to stop and perform a sequence of dance steps before continuing. Egg Head really seems like a unique, once in a lifetime experience so I was with Josh and Brent when they decided to complete that task. Lion's Head, though, went by a lot quicker so Abbie and Ryan, Jaymes and James, Lexi and Trey, and James and Abba were able to finish before the farmers cleaned their plates.

The U-Turn is located at Bangil's top school and just as they promised, no one in the front of the pack sent anyone to complete the other side of the Detour. Of course, the teams on the second train are just fighting to stay in it so they are absolutely going to turn on each other. Rob and Kelley send Gary and Will back and not realizing the monster truckers were in front of them, Gary and Will try to U-Turn them. Ahh, the beauty of a blind U-Turn. Caitlin and Brittany get lost looking for the U-Turn, ending up neck and neck with Gary and Will. Their cab driver takes a wrong turn when it mattered most, opening the door for the substitute teachers to live to see another day.

On a side note, the teachers claim to be superfans of the show, yet said, "We choose not to return anybody!" Nerves, perhaps? Or are they not as obsessed with the race as they're claiming to be?

Teams end up finishing in the following order:
1. Abbie and Ryan (winning a trip to Fiji)
2. Trey and Lexi
3. James and Jaymes
4. James and Abba
5. Josh and Brent
6. Natalie and Nadiya (made it through without using the Express Pass)
7. Rob and Kelley
8. Gary and Will
9. Caitlin and Brittany (eliminated)

Were you sad to see Caitlin and Brittany eliminated? How would you have handled a lost cab driver?
