Felix Fang from MasterChef Season 3

by Todd Betzold

If you were watching MasterChef last week, you probably were as shocked as I was with the elimination. David Martinez had a huge advantage going into the Elimination Test and blew it when he forgot to grab rice for the RICE PUDDING dish he was going to make. Becky saved him and gave him some that she was not using. He then made a dish that Joe Bastianich said was inedibly disgusting! However, Felix Fang was the homecook sent home and David was safe. Today, we got an exclusive interview with Felix as she talked about her experiences on MasterChef, that rice incident and much more.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What made you want to try out for MasterChef?
A. Felix: I love to cook and it's been a pastime of mine. My parents are originally from Hawaii and they had a restaurant while I was growing up, so it was a big part of my life. Seeing food around me and watching them grow, since it was their first restaurant and that was the reason they were doing it to get citizenship because they were originally from Taiwan. It was a learning experience for them and going to different venues and it was just a big part of my life growing up. So, having that around me really inspired me to further enhance my love for food.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: You had some struggles with desserts this season. Is that something you're not used to making?
A. Felix: I actually really like to do desserts. It was probably one of the first things I started to dabble with. I think, basically, when you're on a cooking show, if it's something you've never done before you're really taking a risk. It's a 50-50. I've never made a tiramisu before and the judges told us to soak the lady fingers and I took that literally and I soaked them and they really just need to be dipped and by the time I realized my mistakes it was too late to go back. As far as the Corn Profiteroles go, I was in way over my head trying to do something that might have worked. That's my thing, I think that if I were to do this all over again I would play it a lot smarter instead of trying to challenge myself. I would do something that I know would be good, even it might be easy.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: During the Elimination Test, David Martinez forgot to grab rice for his rice pudding dish. Becky gave him some. How do you feel about that? Would you have given him some if you had rice to give him?
A. Felix: I would have given him rice. I would rather be a fair player, even if he is stupid for not getting the rice (laughs). I would rather beat him out on my own. I think it is do unto others what you want for yourself.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What were you thinking when it was you and David in the bottom two?
A. Felix: To be honest, I thought that I was going to go home. It may be stupid, but I was like oh my god, they're not going to send David home because then there would only be two boys left (laughs).

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What was it like working with all the time constraints of the challenges and food ingredients given to you?
A. Felix: It's nerve-racking, of course, but it's exciting at the same time. You don't know what everyone is going to be throwing at you. You have to think on your toes and be quick. I think sometimes it's a little super-genius and other times not so much (laughs).

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What was your favorite challenge or Pressure Test you took part of this season?
A. Felix: I would probably have to say the feeder challenge. To get to work with something like that, I don't think I would have the opportunity to do that if it hadn't been for being on MasterChef. You can't even go to the store and buy that, so that was really rad.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: What's the biggest thing you are going to take away from this whole MasterChef experience?
A. Felix: It's a learning experience and the friendships. Those really are the two biggest things I am taking away.

Q. Todd, RealityWanted: Has being on MasterChef inspired you to pursue a career in cooking?
A. Felix: Definitely! I guess before it has always been a hobby and something I like to do in my free time. After being on MasterChef, it expanded my horizons on the possibilities of doing this as a side job and not just a hobby. I have done my first catering since I left and it was really good and I think I am going to just start from there. I did my first gig and I don't drive and it was really hard. I live in L.A. and I don't have a car. The gig was for 40 people and an engagement party. When it was done, I felt like I had the life sucked out of me. I worked hard and it turned out great. The couple that got engaged was very happy. I think having these side projects makes having my real job, as far as what I'm doing right now to pay the rent, a little more bearable.

MasterChef airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 9/8c on FOX.
