American Idol Season 11

by Todd Betzold

Steven Tyler started off American Idol last night saying if you can't sing Billy Joel, you can't sing...well, if we go by that logic then there should be more than one singer going home tonight.

They bored me last night and they start out the show boring me again with their group performance...maybe I just don't like Billy Joel songs? I do, though, but they just aren't doing it for me. The added plus this week, the Top 9 will be moving out of the hotels and into the Idol Mansion...a bonus for making it farther.

Let's get to some results...first up: Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine and Elise Testone. Hollie and Skylar are safe. What we think is the bottom three for Elise turns into Ryan surprising her and telling her she is safe as well, so all three girls are safe. I thought Elise would be bottom three, but I am so happy she made it through...she was one of the performances I did enjoy last night.

We get a performance by Lana Del Ray (she's boring to me, but people like her) and then we get a birthday treat for Steven Tyler, whose birthday is this weekend...Joe Perry, from Aerosmith, comes out and leads the audience in singing Happy Birthday for Steven.

Back to the results: DeAndre Brackensick, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez. Bill Joel enjoyed her rendition of the song and so did America, so Jessica is safe. Joshua is safe also, so DeAndre is the first one in the bottom three tonight (I picked him to go home tonight).

We get another performance, this time from last season's Haley Reinhart as she sang her new single, "Free." We then get back to the results...the last four remaining: Colton Dixon, Phillip Phillips, Erika Van Pelt and Heejun Han. With two spots left in the bottom three, with this group it seems obvious as which two will fill them, but let's see. Colton...safe, Erika...bottom three (so not fair), Phillip...safe and Heejun...bottom three.

So, tonight we have Heejun, Erika and DeAndre in the bottom three. Ryan sends back DeAndre...he is safe (ugh). Now, it is down to Heejun and Erika...the one in danger of going home tonight...Erika! Heejun is safe...so not fair. Erika gets her chance to sing for the judges to use their save (and they better)! She does a great job and shows a lot of emotion, but will the judges use their one save? Randy says no, so she is going home...sad face!

American Idol airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8/7c on FOX.
