The Voice Season 2: Blind Auditions

by Todd Betzold

With over 37 million viewers of last night's Season 2 premiere of The Voice, maybe NBC knew what they were doing premiering the show after the Super Bowl? Can they keep up the momentum as it airs on its actual night?

To kick things off, the coaches got together onstage for another performance, like last year, but this time singing some of Prince's greatest songs...not only do I love the show, but I love the coaches too!

Now back to the blind auditions and up first tonight is the first duo of the season, The Line, featuring Hailey and Leland from Nashville. Leland starts out the singing and gets Blake to turn around right away, only to be shocked to see Hailey on the stage as well. The other judges took a while, but we start the night out with all four chairs turning around. After much consideration, they shock me and go with Team Christina and leave Blake hanging. Per Blake, they were fooled by flash and boobs...it gets us all Blake!

Sometimes you see someone and get their back-story and you just wish they sing amazing and do great on the show...that person is Jamar Rogers. An ex-crystal meth addict, HIV+ and his mom there by his side...bring on the tears. He did sing great and he is the biggest fan of Cee Lo and Cee Lo was the only one who turned, so a match made in heaven.

Sad story or not, they all can't get through...Neal Middleton and his no health insurance and family got sent home. This starts a trend of seeing the ones who didn't move on before we meet Gwen Sebastian, who at the age of 37, has put off getting married and having kids to pursue her singing career...will it be worth it? It took some time, but Blake, Cee Lo and Adam turned around to fight for her. As she is choosing, it sounded like she may chose none and go home, but in the end she chose Team Blake.

Now for the oldest contestant in the competition, at 50 years old we get to meet Kim Yarbrough (or is it really Chaka Khan?)...I think she's gonna sing the crap out of her song. Before we hear Kim, we get to hear Pamela Rose sing with all her beauty, but no judges turned around. Now time for Kim and her big ol' boobies hit the stage. She worked it out and got all sexual with the song and I loved it. Adam and Christina turn around for her and she chooses Team Adam.

We've seen her in her Army fatigues singing Adele on Youtube and on Ellen, but now she is trying out for The Voice. Angie Johnson gets out of the fatigues and looks beautiful as she hits the stage and sings her way to Team Cee Lo.

Sexy Yale football player, Dez Duron, is up next to try to sing his way further into the competition. This is proof why I love The Voice over Idol. If he tried out for Idol, he would have made it through on his looks, but being on The Voice it is only judged on voice and he got no one to turn around...looks don't matter here.

Lindsey Pavao, or is it Katy Perry, has some major nerves before going on stage and will freak out if she chokes, but she definitely does not and sounds like Xenia from Season 1, so of course Blake turns around right away. Christina and Cee Lo join him, so she has a decision to make. She sticks with the hair to the side look and goes with Team Christina.

Can Jermaine Paul go from Alicia Keys' background singer to The Voice? His daughter talked him into auditioning and he got a video good luck from Alicia, but before he sings we meet Hoja Lopez...I'm in love. She looks so fun and wild and I love her! Unfortunately, they don't choose her, but now time for Jermaine. We all knew he would be amazing, but he only got Cee Lo and Blake to turn around...who will he choose? In a very entertaining battle for him, Jermaine shockingly chooses Team Blake...good choice.

We will end the night with another powerful background story from Angel Taylor. Abused as a child by her father, her mother took her and her sisters out of the house and she used music as her escape...by the way she sounds, she escaped very well. She said this was her moving on and she moved amazingly. She got Adam, Blake and Cee Lo to turn around and she goes with Team Adam...until next week.

The Voice airs Mondays at 8/7c on NBC.
