Top Chef: Texas

by Gina Scarpa

On last night's Top Chef: Texas, the cheftestants headed back to San Antonio to meet up with Padma and Eric Ripert for their next Quickfire. Using three ingredients from a moving conveyor belt, the chefs have to create a sophisticated dish. Every other ingredient can come from the pantry and the longer you on the conveyor belt, the better the items will be but the less time you will have to cook. Oh Top Chef, you and your double-edged sword!

Eric was no fan of the dishes by Chris, Grayson, and Paul. Sarah impressed with her flavor combinations, Lindsay nailed a bouillabaisse , and Beverly, who didn't even get all three of her ingredients on the plate! Lindsay wins by default since Beverly would've won if she got her third ingredient on the plate. Not really a compliment to Lindsay...

The mouths of the chefs hit the ground when Padma welcomes Charlize Theron, star of the upcoming "Snow White and the Hunstman" into the kitchen. Their Elimination Challenge is to create a gothic dinner fit for a queen - an evil queen, that is! Ingredients like black chicken and vampire steak seem like the tone is being set for a dinner to die for. Okay, I couldn't resist.

Ed serves first and his good and evil dish, based around tuna tartare, goes over well with the judges. Paul's foie gras, complete with a "bloody handprint", is actually a lot more appetizing than it sounds. Beverly imagines Snow White as a piece of halibut, which Charlize feels is cooked perfectly.

Lindsay's seared scallop over "Witch's Stew" is so damn good, in Tom's words. Charlize gushes over Sarah's risotto with lamb's heart (no thanks) and Grayson's plate, which looks like a slaughtered chicken, is deemed crispy and delicious. Last up is Chris, who proves that gimmicky is good, with his poison apple dish.

At Judges' Table, Tom tells everyone that in all the seasons of Top Chef, this was one of his favorite meals.  It's unfortunate that, on a night of such strong dishes, someone has to pack their knives.  Paul is named the winner of this week's Elimination Challenge, as he takes another step forward to winning the whole shebang.  Lindsay, Ed, and Chris are safe which leaves Grayson, Sarah, and Beverly in this week's bottom group. Feeling that they've seen this style of cooking too much from her and that her sauce was a little too sticky for their taste, the judges sent Beverly to Last Chance Kitchen.
