MasterChef Season 2

by Todd Betzold

With only five competitors left, we are down to one of the last Mystery Box Challenges on tonight's MasterChef.

Under tonight's wooden box, the competitors found ground pork, ground veal and ground beef. They had 60 minutes to make an amazing dish that would wow the judges, with them only tasting the top three dishes. Ben realizes quickly that all the ingredients are present for Shepherd's Pie, but Suzy also makes that observation...so a battle of the pies. Mr. Arrogance himself, Christian, is actually stumped at this challenge, as he is not sure what to do for the first time and ends up making a chili.

The judges first pick Jennifer's dish, Meatloaf with Roasted Corn and Homemade Ketchup. The judges said the dish captured all three meats and brings culinary inspiration. Joe says it is a perfect example of adult comfort food and Graham says that she has won three Mystery Box Challenges so far and this could be her fourth.

Up next, the judges choose Adrien's dish, a Meatball Trio. Having also used all three meats and sticking to his roots, Graham said the plating is beautiful. After tasting it though, he changed his mind. He said the perfect compliment to the dish would be a huge glass of water...it was way too salty. Not good for Adrien.

The last dish the judges choose is Ben's dish, Shepherd's Pie with Red Wine Reduction. Suzy is not happy her pie was not chosen, but Ben's pie holds its own, as Chef Ramsay says he has never had pie with veal in it, but he is proud to say he has now. Joe said it is his first and best pie he has ever had.

After some discussion, the judges announce that the winner for the first time is Ben. He gets to head into the pantry with the judges to decide what everyone will be cooking this week. This week's theme are dishes created by a world famous chef...Gordon Ramsay. Ben chooses the venison tenderloin dish to cook and then is allowed to ask three questions to Chef Ramsay on the dish...what could be a huge advantage compared to the others. The other four are only allowed to look and taste the dish, but ask no questions. They are given five minutes in the pantry to pick their ingredients and then 90 minutes to prepare it.

After some nervous cooking and craziness as the time runs out, Suzy is asked to bring up her dish. Joe says that it has good visual and good flavor. Chef Ramsay says that it tastes delicious and she did a great job. Suzy ends up being the only one who makes a dish the judges are happy with.

Christian brings up his dish and Chef Ramsay says it has a lot of pepper and the meat should be the hero and it's not. Joe tells him if he could take the attitude that spews from his mouth and plate it, he would win. Ben brings his up and his meat is overcooked and Chef Ramsay says it is a shame. It's so overcooked...the sauce is so overpowering...he annihilated it.

It continues with Jennifer, who Chef Ramsay said was miles away from the dish he presented to her. Joe says it was a massive disappointment. Adrien ends it on the same note, as Chef Ramsay says he has taken his $87 dish and turned it into something he wouldn't even pay $7 for. So, who will be going home?

Suzy is announced as the best dish and then the judges call the other four up. Jennifer and Christian are asked to step forward. Chef Ramsay says both their dishes were below par, but weren't the bottom two and they are safe. Down to Ben and Adrien. Chef Ramsay says that Adrien's dish looked confused and Ben's sauce was bad and meat was overcooked. In the end, Ben is sent home and Adrien is safe.
