Food Network Star Season 7

Food Network Star is getting closer and closer to the finale and after this episode only four contestants will remain. It is once again time for the contestants to meet at Chelsea Market, but they were not there to visit Food Network headquarters. This time they had an hour to go eat at the local shops and restaurants to find something delicious and then present their favorite food find in a two-minute segment for "Best Thing I Ever Ate" directed by no other than Bobby Flay. Mary Beth and Jeff were the top two in this camera challenge with their funny, entertaining, and insightful segments. Mary Beth chose to talk about a walnut, fig, and gorgonzola cheese crepe and left viewers with the advice to eat the bottom tip first because all the juices and ingredients meld well there and it truly is the best part. Jeff chose to talk about, you guessed it, a rueben sandwich. He had tons of knowledge about how the meat and other ingredients were cooked and described how the food tasted in a way that made us want to reach through the screen and take a bite.

There can be only one winner and our main man Jeff takes home the top prize and an advantage going into the star challenge.

 

The star challenge this week revolved around roasts. They had $300 and four hours to prepare a roast fit to be roasted by some of the nations "best" comedians. Jeff's advantage was that he got to assign the proteins to each contestant. Whitney was assigned pork crown roast, Vic had prime rib, Mary Beth was cooking duck, Jeff assigned rump roast to himself, and Susie had leg of lamb. Mary Beth has never roasted an entire duck before and utilized advice from the butcher for how to best accomplish a tasty quacker. When they were done cooking, they had to present their dish to the usual selection committee as well Louie Anderson, Gilbert Gottfried, Aubrey Plaza, Judy Gold and Anthony Anderson.

 

While presenting, Vic was being his charming self but his dish, a huge slab of prime rib, didn't really reflect his "Mama's Boy" point of view. The selection committee and the comedians both told him that he needed to drop the Vegas part of his concept and concentrate on who he is. Mary Beth managed to impress everyone with her roasted duck with blackberry glaze, but lost the judges with her very academic description of her dish. Jeff presents a very tasty Italian Beef sandwich along with some potato chips cooked in beef fat.

 

Jeff also had to take some ribbing from the professional comedians about his former stand up career, but his confidence and natural charisma carried him through with ease. Susie once again impressed with her culinary story and lovability while serving up a spiced leg of lamb. Whitney presented her superb dish, a take on a BLT, but did so in such a clinical way that Gilbert called her "a soulless, soul eating zombie."

 

At the evaluation, the selection committee asked Vic to finally kill the Vegas part of him and simply be just Vic Moea, the mama's boy. Jeff ended up taking home the top honors as the winner. Also safe for this episode were Vic and Susie leaving Whitney and Mary Beth up for elimination. While Mary Beth needs to learn to be more "user friendly" in her presentation it ended up that Whitney will be leaving this episode due to the fact that she just doesn't come across as fun while presenting. Whitney thanked everyone for the opportunity as she left with tears in her eyes, ending her chance at becoming a Food Network star.
