Celebrity Rehab Season 5

by Mike Bandy

This week's Celebrity Rehab kicked off with Dr. Drew stepping in on the madness happening at the morning meditation between Steven and Amy. Dr. Drew pulled Steven aside and said that he was interfering with Amy's treatment, and that he needed to be gentle with her. Meanwhile, Amy was crying really hard, and Shelly and Bai were attempting to calm her down, which they did.

Dr. Drew decided that in the morning's process group, he needed to get things back on track so that the patients didn't get distracted. Dr. Drew told Steven that he didn't want him attacking Amy, and then he called on Jessica to talk about why she's in rehab. Jessica said that she's been drinking since she was 15, and she only took a break during Survivor. While she was on Survivor the second time, she actually gathered aspirin together and was going to hurt herself, but decided against it. Steven told Jessica that she was awesome for identifying - and that Amy could learn a lesson from her.

Steven kept on attacking Amy, who basically broke down crying and was unable to speak, and Dr. Drew told Steven that his aggression affected the whole group. Amy was dissociating, which Dr. Drew said was dysfunctional and unhealthy, but she'd have to learn to open up and to trust at her own pace. She does trust Dr. Drew, which the group agreed was enough for right now.

This part of the treatment is where the patients begin to deal with the emotional reasons why they turned to drugs and alcohol. Dwight met with Dr. Drew to talk about how his drug use has affected his relationship with his kids, specifically his oldest son, with whom he was jailed in '04 on drug charges. Dwight said that he knows he hurt his kids, and Dr. Drew asked if he'd like to see his son, which he agreed to.

That night, Dwight was asked by Jennifer to write a letter to his kids, about what he feels shameful and regretful about. He put pen to paper, and then read his letter to Jennifer. He said that he loved his children and apologized for not being the father they deserve. He got very emotional, as did Jennifer, and she told him that he's a good person, who's sick.

The next morning, Shelly gathered everybody together for the process group, where they met the Frantz family, who tragically lost their son, Patrick, to a heroin addiction. They played a tape where they discussed what an awesome guy he was and how his addiction progressed, and his father talked about finding him dead the day of his sister's graduation. The family is torn apart by grief and don't know where to turn, and the patients needed to see that so that they could understand what happens to the people they'd leave behind.

The family's story brought out a lot of emotion from the group. Steven told the family that they have to know their son didn't do heroin to hurt them. Steven did heroin for 20 years, and he knows that it wasn't something Patrick could stop. Jessica was very emotional as she talked about her brother, who is currently getting into drugs, and how guilty she felt for not being there for him. Dr. Drew told her that her recovery would speak volumes for him.

The next morning, Steven was still upset over Amy, because he said she was the weak link of the group. Jessica said that Amy wants help, and Steven said that she doesn't, and that takes away from his recovery. On this day, Dr. Drew and Dr. John Starp, who will be overseeing Dwight's aftercare, met with Dwight to talk about what happened with his son. His son came in, and Dwight apologized to him for choosing drugs over him. Both men got very emotional, and this may have been a big breakthrough for Dwight.

At the meditation, Amy finally identified as an alcoholic. She said she only did it to make Steven happy, and he got upset with her. Steven asked Amy if she wasn't an addict, why was she there? He then got very angry and grabbed Shelly, and kept yelling at Amy, until he was forced to leave group.

Amy was traumatized, and didn't want to go to process group because she was so afraid of Steven. She did show up, just as Steven was yelling about how she was wasting everyone's time. He told Dr. Drew that it's either her or him, and stormed away from the group. When he did so, Amy opened up about her addictions to pills and alcohol, and said that she just couldn't talk in front of Steven.

Meanwhile, Shelly approached Steven and said that he was going to use, and he agreed with her, before storming out of the Center.
