So You Think You Can Dance Season 7

by Danae Young

This week on So You Think You Can Dance, Ashley has a serious injury that has kept her from performing, which automatically places her in the bottom three.

Just like last week, each contestant will perform twice; once with an all-star and once with another contestant.

Dancers: Lauren and Mark
Style: Cultural
Choreographer: Tiana Liufau
Song: “Jungle” by Last Voices
Mark played “night” and Lauren played “day” in their Tahitian dance. The name of the song described their outfits perfectly. Lauren moved her hips incredibly well. The performance was fun to watch, especially because it was different from the norm.

Dancers: Adechike and Anya
Style: Salsa
Choreographer: Liz Lira and Danny Davalos
Song: “Oyelo Que Te Conviene” by Eddie Palmieri
The dance was very intricate with some crazy moves. It was super fast paced but sometimes it was not the smoothest that it could have probably been.

Dancers: Jose and Courtney
Style: Broadway
Choreographer: Joey Dowling
Song: “Mister Cellophane” by Chicago (Motion Picture soundtrack)
Courtney played a showgirl and Jose was a stagehand mesmerized by Courtney. He had to play a sad character and showing that emotion in his face was key. He definitely did a great job staying in character and the storyline was great. Unfortunately, the judges didn’t think he danced the routine well.

Dancers: Robert and Allison
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Travis Wall
Song: “Fix You” by Coldplay
The dance is about Travis’s mother and her struggles in the hospital. It was a very person storytelling routine, which put more pressure on the dancers. Robert received a standing ovation from the judges. The dance moved everyone in the audience, and even brought tears to some.

Dancers: Billy and Anya
Style: Jive
Choreographer: Louis Van Amstel
Song: “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” by Meat Loaf
Billy needed to improve the connection he has with Anya while they dance. He actually improved a lot in that area. The dance was extremely quick. It made me tired just to watch it! The two of them did a great job and Billy really stepped up his game this week.

Dancers: Kent and Neil
Style: Broadway
Choreographer: Tyce Diorio
Song: “Shoeless Joe From Hannibal, MO” by Damn Yankees (1994 original Broadway cast)
The performance was about baseball players. The boys were great at staying in sync with each other. The dance was very playful and fun. There were some great flips in the routine as well. Nigel voted Kent as MVP for this week.

Dancers: Lauren and Billy
Style: Jazz
Choreographer: Mandy Moore
Song: “Boogie Shoes” by KC and The Sunshine Band
The dance had an awesome story. When Lauren and Billy put their shoes on, they kind of take over their body. It was really cute and such a genius idea by Mandy. The dance was just fun and quirky. They had a good chemistry that really showed in their routine.

Dancers: Jose and Dominic
Style: B Boy
Choreographer: Tabitha and Napoleon Dimo
Song: “Battle of the Beat” by District 78
This is the first time this style has ever been on the show, and who better to perform it than Jose? I love this style of dance so I may be a little bias but I thought it was great. They did some pretty crazy moves and Jose totally redeemed himself from his earlier performance.

Dancers: Adechike and Kent
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Dee Caspary
Song: “You Only Disappear” by Tom McRae
To say a little about the routine, Kent has a chair for a girlfriend and Adechike is trying to get him away from her. It sounds a little weird, I know, but it was a great dance. They had some amazing moves both together and as individuals.

Dancers: Robert and Kathryn
Style: Disco
Choreographer: Doriana Sanchez
Song: “Instant Replay” by Dan Hartman
This was a really fun and exciting dance filled with energy and lots of cool lifts. Robert got mixed reviews from the judges, but all-in-all he did a really great job.
