GK Reid from Double Exposure

by Gina Scarpa and Kristal Bailey

Last week, Bravo aired the premiere of its latest reality show, Double Exposure, and we were introduced to the creative duo of Markus Klinko and Indrani. GK Reid works with the pair as their stylist, making their photo sessions complete with his fashion expertise and input. RealityWanted spoke to GK today in an exclusive interview about he show, his relationship with Markus and Indrani, and his passion for being a stylist.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How did you meet and start working with Markus and Indrani?
A. GK: We first met a little over 9 years ago. Their agent, at the time, had seen my portfolio and he said, "You should work with them." Sure enough, when we sat down together, we all got on really well and they loved what I do and what I bring to the table.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you feel like their romantic history affects their photography at all?
A. GK: I think that's a really good question. People come to them for them for the images they create and how they create them. How they work together is an usual dynamic because there is a lot of tension, which you see on the show, but there's also a lot of love and understanding. They really trust each other and they're really, really close. Sometimes, I have to pull them apart and tell them to calm down but for the most part, as a team, we're really tackling the work and loving it.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What was your reaction when you found out that you would be starring on a reality show?
A. GK: I was actually initially pretty nervous about the whole idea. It was Markus and Indrani's idea and they said that I should do it with them. I was resistant to it at first. It took me a while to warm up to the whole idea. I'm really glad that I did it. I wasn't that comfortable in front of the camera. I've always been behind the scenes, making people look great . I was not that excited about a camera in my face but over the process, I learned it's kind of a great way to show what we do. It's a lot different from what you'd see on reality tv because a lot of reality tv today is set up and staged. We have a lot to do already. There's nothing they can be set up and staged.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What inspired you to get involved with photography?
A. GK: Getting the opportunity to work with incredible people like Dita von Teese, who's on the show tonight. She's glamorous, elegant, and loves fashion like I do. She uses fashion to express her art form. That's really one of the reasons. We have Lindsay Lohan tonight as well. Working with other artists is what drove me to become a stylist. I love working with other photographers, directors, and we photograph celebrities, models, politicians, all kinds of people.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: In the first episode, we saw how stressful a photo shoot can be. What makes a shoot so stressful?
A. GK: The Frank Lloyd Wright building was stressful because there wasn't good communication between the model and photographer. They felt pressure because they were far away. Sometimes, the pressure of getting the shot in a short amount of time can cause some miscommunication. Once Markus and Indrani combine their perspectives, we're on a better page. I try to get them to work together to crate those great shots because they're geniuses.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Double Exposure is popular with Bravo fans and on our site. Do you see the show going beyond one season?
A. GK: I hope so! I ‘m surprised to hear myself saying this. Reality tv isn't something I was driven towards. I think more about what I love to do, working with these artists. I look at it as another beautiful platform and sharing with other artists how we go about it. I'm sure there are people who will say, "I wouldn't shoot or style like that," and that's what's fun about it. We do what we're doing and people do what they're doing. It's creative dialogue. It's not always easy but it doesn't have to be difficult. We all love what we do.
