Work of Art: The Next Great Artist

by Mike Bandy

The second episode of Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, began with the 13 remaining artists heading to a junkyard, where the artists are told that they will have to create art out of old electronic equipment. There is much scrambling as the artists have half an hour to gather as much of the old junk as they can. They have until midnight that night and all day the next day to create their pieces. Miles, who struggles with OCD, has been having trouble sleeping since the competition began, and takes this opportunity to take a short nap. He wakes up inspired to create a piece relating to sleep.

After the scrap yard, the artists head to a hardware store, where they have $100 each that they can spend on supplies. Then the work began!

Abdi piece, "Tube", was a statue made out of spray foam and plaster, and he was having a lot of trouble getting the spray foam to work. He pulled it together, though, and added an old television set for the head, and a video game controller in the hands. Nicole decided to use her 70's television set as a tomb, and encased all of the other electronics she picked up inside of it, so that you could peer in from above and see them. Jaclyn had a bit of trouble with her "Transmit" piece; a television set inside an aquarium-type structure that she had built. The television was under water inside a trash bag, with a rope attached.

Truong decided to take a literal approach with his piece; three television sets watching a television set, entitled "WWTFD" (What would Tom Friedman Do?), while Ryan went more abstract with his "Zebra Vacuum Spiral", a conglomeration of wire, old television sets, radios, and white paint. He described it as "serpentine." Peregrine's piece, "A Conversation Between a Widow and Herself" was two televisions (they actually worked!) facing each other inside a mesh casing. It was a slightly more abstract piece than Judith's "Aint no Grave" which was a bunch of wires underneath a wire frame, and they snaked out to a shorter wire frame, and an old speaker which Judith turned into some sort of flower.

Miles created "Worst Place," a bed which he silkscreened an electrical pattern on top of, combined with two concrete anuses, one on each side. During the gallery show, he slept on the bed, and this made the judges feel like they really got to know him. On the flip side, Jamie Lynn's piece, "Death of the Family Appliances", left the judges not feeling much of anything. This was a combination of painting and sculpture and involved an old vacuum and a floor lamp.

Nao's piece, Mama, was a bunch of cardboard and paper situated inside the back of an old television set, while Mark created "Dia de los Televisiones" a day of the dead inspired piece which was an old tv, painted gold, and covered in crosses, skulls, and symbols of Santeria. Erik created a piece which consisted on an old radio and numerous other appliances modeled to look like a corpse. John's piece, "New Stock" was a bunch of television sets, radios and speakers stacked on top of each other and painted black and red.

At the elimination, the top three were Miles, Abdi and Nicole, with Miles being the winner for the second week in a row. The bottom three were Judith, Jamie Lynn and Truong, with Truong being eliminated for being too literal.
