Losing it with Jillian

by David McAlpine

Last week on Losing It with Jillian, it was the Jones family who were the subject of Jillian's life-changing ways. She helped daughter Isabella to find her voice to her mom and she helped diabetic mother Debra to shed some weight and lose her dependence on her diabetic medications.

Unfortunately, this week, I find myself on the east coast, where President Obama's speech on oil takes much higher precedence to the newest episode of Losing It with Jillian. Even though the episode resumed 20 minutes in, I looked through the site this morning and here's what I can gather we missed:

Jillian moves in with the May family, a single-mom-led family and family of four from Bakersfield, California. Mom Ruth, 54, recently ended her "perfect" 30-year marriage from divorce after her daughter, Ashley, 22, caught her dad cheating. The whole thing has gone down in the past year, so it still stings for Ruth. The other two children at home are Rachael, 24 and David, 18, and two of Ruth's other children don't live at home anymore.

Now, after the divorce, Ruth's weight has ballooned, as have her two daughters', thanks to their jobs at In-N-Out (a popular west coast fast food chain), and their self-esteem has gone down the drain. Not to mention, we missed Curtis Stone coming over to teach the girls a couple lessons about cooking, which is always fun to watch.

Back to where the show picks up and Ruth is angry at Jillian for not letting her look through everything before she put it out at the garage sale. I don't want to place any blame or stereotype, but it seems like Ruth has been turned into a hoarder from her divorce, so she lashes out at Jillian. Ashley gets upset right back, wanting her mom to take into account her kids' feelings.

In true Jillian fashion, she takes them all to the gym to hash it out. Immediately, you can see Ruth's attitude changing. She doesn't look so helpless anymore and she looks ready to take on the world. So, her kids try to give her the best present they can: a subscription AND a profile to an online dating site (which I think is questionable, but cute in this context). To make things better, she even has a date already, who is much too enthusiastic to see her. Plus, I think Ruth can do better.

While Ruth is out, Rachel and Ashley get the wrath of Jillian, screaming at them in her I'm-being-mean-because-you-need-tough-love kind of way. Jillian takes the opportunity to bond with the girls and shove it into their heads that they are worthwhile people, which is much needed for the pair.

Then, it's sadly time for Jillian to leave, so she lays out goals for the family. Ruth's job is to work on her anger and meet more people, while the girls want to work on their self-esteem and lose the weight. Flash forward two weeks and the May family is definitely on track to success. But go ahead two more weeks and they start to level out, struggling to keep up with their goals and keep a positive outlook.

Eight weeks after she came over, Jillian reunites with the rest of the May family at a reunion in Southern California. Ashley appears first, having lost 34 pounds and looking fantastic. Rachael looks amazing, too, having lost 30 pounds and now down to a skinny size 6. And then there was Ruth, whose goal was to lose 20 pounds. After sticking her leg out and teasing the audience, she steps out, looking like half a person--and 74 pounds lighter. For their hard work, Jillian gives the Mays $50,000 towards schooling.

Tune in next Tuesday at 8/7c to see Jillian transform more families' lives, only on NBC!
