American Idol Season 9

by Gina Scarpa

Is it me or do the American Idol results shows get more and more dramatic with each passing week? They open the show with a movie trailer like intro that seems like winning Idol is a life or death situation. News flash - it's not. You might become uber famous (a la Carrie Underwood) or you might fade away, never to be heard from again (I'm talking to you, Taylor Hicks).

One winner who's trying to keep herself in the spotlight, Fantasia, kicks off tonight's show with a song that's fair at best. Let's put it this way. You'll never hear it on Top 40 radio. Fantasia update: Her daughter is now 9 years old and she has a new album ready to hit stores soon.

Following the Ford commercial, which featured Casey in leiderhosen, a montage is shown of the hometown welcomes that past Idols have received. It's always pretty impressive to see just how many people turn out to see them. Whether you like it or not, Idol is HUGE. The Top 3 will get to experience those welcomes next week, after making it through tonight.

Time for some results and to add a layer of stress for the contestants, their families/friends have been brought onto the stage. The first person to make it into the Top 3 is Casey. Wow, that means either Lee or Crystal are in the bottom this week. A little surprising, right?

If these four singers want to take a page out of the Idol Success Story book, then they should pay attention to Chris Daughtry, who performed his song "September" with his band. Afterwards, Ryan asks Ellen what the contestants can take away from that performance and she couldn't seem to answer the question. Maybe it's just that Daughtry has an element of star power, something indescribable really, that these four are lacking a bit. Not really something you can take away from tonight, but at least something you can take note of and try to emulate.

More results. Lee is safe and in the Top 3, which means that Big Mike and Crystal are in the bottom. I'm not surprised at Mike but it's definitely a shock to see Crystal there. I would've bet money on Mike and Casey going up against each other for that last spot to stay in the competition.

The Idol performances keep on rolling with legends Bon Jovi taking the stage. They're currently out on tour and will be rereleasing past albums with live and bonus tracks.

It's time for Ryan to hand down the final decision and the person leaving American Idol is... Big Mike. He dodged a bullet once with the judges' save but his time on Idol has come to an end.

Be sure to tune in when the Top 3 take the stage on American Idol, Tuesday at 8/7c on Fox.
