Alex Lambert

When Alex Lambert was eliminated from American Idol (far too early, in many people's opinion), it seemed like the end of the road for the aspiring singer/songwriter. However, just like the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens. Alex was asked to take part in the online reality show, If I Can Dream, created by Simon Fuller, which follows young talented people on the road to fame. Today, Alex spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about life after Idol, his new show, and his music.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When you were eliminated from Idol and then got the call for If I Can Dream, what was your reaction?
A. Alex: When I found out, honestly, I couldn't be happier because I was in Texas and felt really trapped there. I was in LA being exposed to new people and new things and then, all of a sudden, I'm in boring, old Texas. Right when I got that phone call, that I'd be living in the house in L.A., I was like, "I'm in!" That's where I need to be for my music.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How was it to live with the other people from If I Can Dream in a house? Was there a lot of drama?
A. Alex: A lot of people on Idol didn't see that I'm a jokester. All the drama in the house and all that stuff is just kinda like... I'm not gonna let that get in the way of my music. I don't know how to put it. It's there but I'm just there to escalate my music.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Were you concerned at all about being filmed so much on this show? People would be seeing your successes and your failures.
A. Alex: No, people need to know who I am in order to understand my music. I was talking to Lee Dewyze (from American Idol) last night on the phone for an hour and he was saying, "Is it weird that people can see you all the time?" and I said, "I want to be on camera. If I didn't want to be on camera, I wouldn't be here." I want people to know who I am.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: I liked the song that was on this most recent highlight episode that you recorded. Are you going to release it?
A. Alex: This is the way I'm gonna put that song. That was my first demo ever. That was one of the first songs I had been writing. I have probably 10 better songs than that one. People are like, "Yeah, are you gonna put that song out?" but I wanna put one out that's better.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: This week, we saw you working with songwriters from Deekay Music. Are you going to keep working with them?
A. Alex: I worked with Deekay the day before yesterday. They're great songwriters. I'll definitely be working with them. I don't know that every track on my album will be written by them, but a few will be because they understand my vibe and my sound. They understand the range of my voice. I haven't worked with them a lot, but I've worked a few songs with them.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: How important is it to you to stay true to yourself and not sell out in order to become famous?
A. Alex: When you say sell out, this is what I think. There's no way I can sell out. They tell me to do something, and I do it and put my own swagger or spin on it. That's what happens. I'm not just a singer, I'm a songwriter. I'm a lyricist.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What are you hoping you accomplish from being on If I Can Dream?
A. Alex: The show is obviously about people being able to watch us become what we want to be. That's all I want. I want everyone to see who I was. I'm not going to change. I want people to see who I am right now as an American Idol reject. I want people to see me when I have a single on the radio or drop an album. Right now, I don't have any music out so people are basing my talent off of other people's songs. People come off of Idol and do more covers. You have to realize that people want to see what you can do.
