The Marriage Ref

by Lindsay Strouse

This week’s panel of celebrity judges on The Marriage Ref includes late night television host Jimmy Fallon, actress Kirstie Alley and singer Sheryl Crow. Now that’s a random grouping if I ever saw one. In the wise words of the Marriage Ref himself, Tom Papa, “We like to pick apart celebrity marriage. Now they get to pick apart ours.” Here are some of the newest whacky couples we met tonight:

Issue: Ventrilo-quest
We meet Jim and Lynda, a couple who met in junior high and has been in love ever since. The one thing getting in the way of their marriage are Jim’s little friends. I get creeped out by one dummy, imagine a whole house full of them! They are literally EVERYWHERE. He even has an alien ventriloquist doll wearing a NASA suit. Kirstie and Sheryl both think Jim should get a dollhouse for the dummies. Now they get their own house? Give me a break!

The girls stick together and both side with the husband. Jimmy feels for the wife and sides with her, saying the dummies have to go. However, once seeing some more videos of the dolls and seeing a BABY ventriloquist doll, Sheryl changes her vote to side with the wife. When it comes time for the call, Tom Papa sides with the wife. Time to put the dolls away, Jim.

Issue: To Dye For
Mit and Stacey Drewer have been married for six years. Mit’s a real estate agent that wants to be the newest celebrity chef on the Food Network. In order to boost his future ratings, Mit decides the best thing to do is to dye his hair platinum blonde. Guy Fieri look-a-like, possibly? Meanwhile, his wife Stacey attempts to make her argument while drinking out of a wine glass the size of the punch bowl. Her vote should be null if she’s drinking out of that thing 24/7.

Once again, the two ladies on the panel are on board with each other: Kirstie likes his hair better than his natural brunette look. Sheryl points out that if the wife dyed her hair blonde, why can’t the husband? The final count is two for the husband and one for the wife. Tom Papa sides with his boy Jimmy once again and claims the wife as the winner. I guess there are enough platinum blonde chefs out there already…

Issue: Royal Flush
Brian and Caren have been married for 26 years. He wants a “Man’s Land”: otherwise known as a room for a urinal. He promises to tend to it and keep it sparkling clean. I’m sorry, is that supposed to make me like it more? I’m with the wife on this one. Honestly, who would want a urinal in their house? As Jimmy Fallon puts it, it is selfish to have a urinal since the lady of the house is unable to participate.

We then learn all about the different kinds of urinals available and find out Brian has been searching for the perfect urinal for four or five years now. Fabulous. I mean, what would YOU think if you walked into a person’s bathroom and was greeted with only a urinal? Jimmy sides with the wife once again although I’m not entirely sure why. Kirstie and Sherly tag-team it and go with the husband. Marriage Ref says guys get too much freedom with where they get to pee and that he isn’t allowed to get the urinal. Caren wins!

The Issue: The Fried Chef
Next we meet a cute couple by the names of George and Ellena, who have been married for 12 years. And in those 12 years, George has cooked every single meal. In Ellena’s defense, she says, “I’m your wife. You’re supposed to feed me!” We find out George is retired from the army and Ellena is a full-time social worker. Sure it is nice to have a hot dinner on the table when you come home from work, but would it kill her to say please? All three panelists side with the husband on this one and Tom Papa agrees. He suggests the couple ask Mit Drewer from the previous issue to be their own personal chef. They sample one of his famous “Capt’n Crunch Crabcakes” and they love it. Alls well that ends well.

Issue:  The Dishes
Fran and Ira have been married for 16 years. Fran wants Ira to wash the dishes immediately after dinner but Ira wants to take his sweet time.  Fran said that if they had a work relationship, she would fire him. Ouch! Because this is the last couple of the night, Tom decides to let one of celebrities on the panel make the final call. And the new marriage ref is…Kirstie Alley! Kirstie decides to vote for the husband because of the fact that he is actually doing the dishes while most husbands wouldn’t do them at all. Good call, good call.
