The Biggest Loser 9: Episode 10 Recap

The Biggest Loser 9

by David McAlpine

Last week on The Biggest Loser, teams put their cooking skills to the test in a challenge by celebrity chef Curtis Stone. Koli and Michael hit important milestones (falling below 300 and 400 pounds, respectively), while the underdog Black Team lost again at the weigh-in. The votes were close, but eventually Sherry was deemed the next casualty of the ranch.

Last night, the remaining contestants go to have a little taste of home by getting a visit to their hometown. None of their family members or friends can believe how good they look (and now that we're seeing several before and after pictures, I really can't believe it, either), and everyone starts crying.

Of course, nothing can be right on the Biggest Loser without a twist. When each contestant got home, their family had a huge wooden crate for them. Inside the crate was an exercise bike…and tons of mini cupcakes in a smaller box. This wasn't just a gift or a prize, of course, it was this week's prize challenge and temptation! Each contestant would be using that exercise bike to bike an entire marathon by themselves.

That's not all, though. Each cupcake, which counts as 100 calories (and I'm sure endless grams of fat, I could tell they were Crumbs Cupcakes and man, they're good) can add on five minutes to another player's time. The winner walks away with $10,000--how's that for incentive?

One thing that most people forget until these at-home visits is that several of the couples actually live with each other, thus when one goes home and the other one has been eliminated, they usually have something to say. Case in point: Melissa. Even though Lance seemed hesitant, Melissa was the devil on his shoulder urging him to give in to temptation and screw with other players' times. After all the damage was done, Lance ate 17 cupcakes and gave most of the time to his own teammates. Smart thinking there, Lance, way to listen to Melissa.

Aside from Drea eating a cupcake to add on to Sam's time, everyone else claimed they wanted to compete fairly. It wasn't just the biking marathon they had to worry about, though. They had to fit in exercising at a gym at home and deal with nutrition. For some reason (*cough*producers*cough*), everyone's families were being very generous with the food, ordering everything that equated to a heart attack on a plate. Not too sure that's how a supportive family acts, so I'm just going to chalk it up to production value.

Daris even starts to get noticed by girls while he's home! Everyone has clearly gone a long way from where they were at the beginning of the year and they're all seeming much more comfortable and confident in their own skin.

After all the commotion at home, they're off on the bikes! It's surprisingly intense, watching everyone do this from home. It's like they're all desperately trying to reach this goal, but no one knows exactly where anyone is. How suspenseful! Except that Sam takes off at the beginning and leads the entire way, finishing first out of everyone else.

Except when you add in the cupcakes. After those, he moved all the way down to 8th place, meaning runner-up Koli got to take home the cash prize. Back to the ranch they went for a last-chance workout, where Lance was the only one who struggled because he felt guilty that he was there and Melissa wasn't. Let me get this straight: Lance is guilty about being on the ranch over a woman who encouraged him to eat 17 cupcakes at home? I don't get it.

The results of the weigh-in were as follows:

Daris: -4
Koli: -10
Lance: -8
Michael: -8
O'Neal: -7
Sunshine: -8
Blue Team Total: -45 (-2.58%)

Andrea: -6
Ashley: -10
Sam: -14
Stephanie: -9
Black Team Total: -39 (-3.86%)

Several more milestones were passed this week, including O'Neal breaking under 300 pounds and Stephanie breaking under 200. After a rough week, the Black Team manages to pull the rug out from under the Blue Team's feet again, forcing them to send someone home.

Michael knew he was on the chopping block and that he hadn't been too nice lately, so he starts begging to stay. And I mean begging. For the entire time, I didn't think it was going to work, but only Lance votes for him to leave. Instead, everyone else decides to send Lance home to Melissa since he was feeling so guilty. Back at home, Lance has lost another 9 pounds to get to 265. He hopes to be down to 220 by the finale.

Tune in next week to the Biggest Loser to see which contestant is the next one cast from the ranch--only at 8/7c on NBC!
