Episode 3: Moloty Cocktail

Ty is the primary focus of this week’s episode as we delve even deeper into the inane depravity that is The Real World: DC.

As a result of his sudden breakup with his girlfriend Lauren, Ty has been feeling quite vulnerable and his rebounding with Emily is beginning to wear on him.  Evidently, he is a bit of a serial monogamist, and Emily isn’t having any of it.  She considers herself somewhat of a free agent and is using her time in DC to be all about her.  Emily decides to further emphasize this point by flirting with another man at a bar.  Later that evening a very inebriated Ty and Emily decide to duke things out physically.  After wrestling her to the ground, Ty pins Emily who decides that her only course of action is to surrender, like a normal person spit in Ty’s face!

Y’know Emily, in most circles if you want to threaten people like a man, hit people like a man, and put on a show like you were a man… you should expect to get punched in the face like a man.  I’m not saying its right, but I’m part Indian; I hail from the slap-a-ho tribe.

But see, this is what I find so interesting: Ty’s relationship with Emily strikes me, strangely enough, as a good example of the Quantum Zeno effect.  And what is the Quantum Zeno effect? It is the suppression of unitary time evolution caused by quantum decoherence in quantum systems provided by a variety of sources: measurement, interactions with the environment, stochastic fields, etc.  Essentially, the mere act of observing something drastically changes its properties (i.e. “a watched pot never boils”).  If the phenomenon of “Emily and Ty” were to occur in the wild, I doubt it would ever have flourished to the extent it has now.  That’s not to belittle any feelings they may sincerely have for one another, but the fact of the matter is that Emily would have kicked their relationship in a matter of a week were they not living together and under constant observation by the cameras.

Later in the episode, we are taken to the middle of a conversation regarding Playboy models, and Callie states she would never be a model for Playboy, to which Ty remarks “Yeah, you’re not skinny enough.”  And here we see how reality fractions when it comes to genders.  To a guy, any guy, that was a funny (albeit slightly mean) joke...  and that’s all it was; no deep-seated hatred or malice intended.  Yet, to a woman, it comes across as a personal dig which can dramatically alter the basis of a friendship.

Was it potentially hurtful? Yes.  However, that’s not really Ty’s fault.  I’ve seen no evidence to indicate Ty was aware of Callie’s long-standing struggle with her body image, nor is it Ty’s responsibility to maintain her self-esteem.  To quote Katt Williams, “It’s called self-esteem, esteem of your ****** self.  How can I **** up how you feel about you?” Afterwards, Ty defended his statement and attempted to combat Callie’s emotions with logic, which is, well a stupid idea.  Rational logic will never win a battle against delicate emotional stability.

So there you have it, Ty is more or less the villain of this episode, but I still come off liking the guy.  If anything, I think Emily needs to be clear, in no uncertain terms, about the status of her and Ty’s relationship and stay the hell in her own bed. Also, we haven’t seen a whole heck of a lot of Josh.  Perhaps he’s not causing any real drama and is being a faithful boyfriend and productive member of society.  Still, I hope we get to see more him as the season progresses.
