Ashleigh DiLello from So You Think You Can Dance Season 6

The road for Ashleigh DiLello on So You Think You Can Dance this season has certainly had its ups and downs.  The judges were not on board with her during Vegas week and initially, did not put her through to the Top 20 but after one contestant dropped out of the competition, Ashleigh was put in as a replacement.  From there, she shined (along with her partner Jakob Karr) and sailed through to Top 10.  At Top 8, she suffered an injury that prevented her from dancing but the fans came through and voted for her to be in the finale.  Ashleigh ended up coming in fifth, with her husband right behind her but the two could not have been more grateful for every part of being in the competition.  Today, Ashleigh spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about her experiences on the show.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What made you and Ryan decide to try out for So You Think You Can Dance this season?
A. Ashleigh: It was kind of last minute.  We had been traveling and performing for the last year.  We had just gotten back and were planning what to do next.  We saw that the auditions for So You Think You Can Dance were coming to Salt Lake City.  We tried out, we made it to Vegas, and we started getting more excited.  I’m so grateful for the experience.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: The judges were pretty harsh to you in Vegas.  How did you handle it?
A. Ashleigh: You know, what was hard about it is that you can never expect what the judges are going to say.  I had never experienced anything like that.  I’m grateful that I got to grow and learn and that I was pushed to grow, too.  As the show began, the judges were more complimentary.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You and Jakob were such a great pair to watch this season.  What was that partnership like, for you?
A. Ashleigh: From the beginning, we were so grateful to be paired up.  It was so easy and it was the best partnership I had ever experienced.  We were both hard workers who came from different styles.  He pushed me to rise to his level because most of the time, we were in his comfort zone.  I was so happy when we pulled the cha cha, because I was finally in my comfort zone.  Most of the dancers are solo dancers and this competition is all about partnership so I was able to help him with that.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: I know that one reason you and Ryan wanted to make it to the finale was that so you could dance together.  What did that mean to the two of you to be able to experience that together?
A. Ashleigh: It’s so hard to put into words.  The journey was incredible and we got to be here together.  There are so many talented dancers!  I was disappointed Ryan and I didn’t get Latin ballroom but then we had that contemporary piece with Travis Wall and the song and the choreography were perfect.  We got to express, through dance, how we feel about each other.  It was overwhelming.  At one moment during the routine, I just wanted to cry!

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: It looked like you were in trouble when you suffered the injury at Top 8 and weren’t able to dance.  How did you feel when the fans voted for you to go to the finale?
A. Ashleigh: It was so humbling.  I have so much gratitude.  When I got injured, it was frustrating moment of my life.  Russell and I had such great numbers, with the Bollywood and hip hop.  I felt like I could dance but the doctors were being cautious and I understand why.  I thought that that could’ve been it for me because everyone had such a great night.  There was such an outpouring of support for me and I was touched to have another week to dance.  I was so grateful.
