Shannon “Shambo” Waters from Survivor Samoa

by Gina Scarpa

Like her or not, Shannon “Shambo” Waters will be one of the most memorable Survivors ever to play the game.  This season, on Survivor: Samoa, she started out on the Galu tribe, only to be alienated by her teammates.  She bonded more with the Foa Foa tribe and flipped to work with them when the merge took place.  Aligned with Russell Hantz, she helped take out her former tribemates one by one but when the Foa Foa four didn’t need her anymore, they voted her out of the game.  Today, Shambo spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about her experiences in the game.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What brought you to Survivor this season?
A. Shambo: I’ve been watching since the very first episode.  I had friends and family who would say, “You should go on Survivor,” but I didn’t know because of my shoulder.  Then, two years ago, I decided to get in shape and change my life.  I was working out 3-4 hours a day and I dropped 40 pounds in the first year, and 30 pounds in the second year.  I hopped on my Harley and I did my video.  I gave a self-pitch of a lifetime.  I listed all of the accomplishments in my life, my hobbies… a couple days later, I got a call and I was shocked.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Were you disappointed that you were put on the Galu tribe for the first half of the competition?
A. Shambo: Well, I don’t think it was disappointment.  It was the cards I was dealt.  I spent the first 6 out of 13 days with Foa Foa and they were just uplifting, good, decent, hardworking people.  They were part of the process of surviving and that made the merge encouraging.  Galu had some great points, though.  We won together as a tribe but they imploded themselves when they voted out Erik.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Who, from Galu, are you truly friends with?
A. Shambo: I will always be friends with Yasmin.  I love her.  You know where you stand with her.  I love Erik, he’s such a hard worker.  I absolutely adore Brett.  His mom should be so proud.  Chief Russ… I love him as a human being but didn’t understand his politics.  I’m friends with Monica, too.  I hold no ill will towards the rest of the people.  It’s a game.  There are no disparaging

feelings.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Now that you’ve seen the episodes, has your opinion of Russell, on Foa Foa, changed?
A. Shambo: It hasn’t changed.  It just confirmed that he went on Survivor to be the ultimate nasty, bad guy.  Kudos to you.  You succeeded.  My hat’s off to him.  When I walk down the street, I’m happy I’m Shambo and not Russell.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Was this week’s vote a blindside or did you know you were going home?
A. Shambo: I was 99.9% sure I was going home.  There was no one else they could’ve voted out.  It’s the only time I packed everything.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: If you had stayed, would you have been loyal to Russell to the end?
A. Shambo: Absolutely positively.  I stayed true to my personal convictions in the game.  Even when we were going to vote out Laura, I approached Brett because I wanted to own the fact that I wanted her out.  You can’t have the flip flop thing going on.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Was it a smart move to vote you out when they did?
A. Shambo: I don’t know if it was smart.  I was injured and I was able to sustain myself for weeks but it was probably a good call to get rid of me.  I could not provide assistance in taking Brett out.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When you sit on the jury, are you bitter about things that happened in the game or do you try to look at things from a more open perspective?
A. Shambo: I have no bitter feelings.  I stated my own personal feelings and if it’s shown, then you’ll know but I harbor no ill will.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Overall, are you satisfied with the experience of being on Survivor and was it what you expected?
A. Shambo: I’m satisfied with the experience.  I think it’s a little bit funny that they pitched me as this knucklehead because that’s the farthest thing from the truth.  It was nothing like I thought it would be… the storms, not having fire or water for days.  You can’t process it but this was one hell of an experience.  I don’t think any of us were prepared for how hard it was going to be.

Be sure to tune in to the Survivor: Samoa finale, Sunday night beginning at 8pm ET on CBS.
