Legacy Perez from So You Think You Can Dance Season 6

by Gina Scarpa

On last night’s live results episode of So You Think You Can Dance, Legacy Perez and Ryan Di Lello found themselves in the bottom group after not pulling in enough votes.  Meanwhile, Russell Ferguson and Jakob Farr sailed on through to the finale.  After dancing their solos, it was time for the results and when host Cat Deeley revealed that fan favorite Legacy would be the one leaving the competition, the shock in the room was evident.  Today, Legacy spoke to reporters in a press conference call about his experiences on the show, his elimination, and what’s next for him.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Nigel said, after last night’s show, that America didn’t vote against you, they voted for Ashleigh and Ryan.  Do you agree with that?
A. Legacy: Absolutely!  Nobody gets voted against.  It’s more like, people have their moments where they feel like they want to vote for something.  It’s a free will vote and unfortunately, I was the one int eh bottom.  I’m excited I left at this point

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You were so great in so many of the dances.  Was there a specific style that you feel you learned the most from?
A. Legacy: You know what?  I learned my body more than anything.  With every genre, I can apply everything to my genre.  I felt like everything as a unit made it so that I’m able to understand dance in a better light.

Q. Can you talk a little bit about your move out to L.A.?
A. Legacy: I was in Miami and I saw a movie which everybody was a part of and me and my friend were like, “Why aren’t we in this movie?  Let’s go out to L.A.”  I had $240 in my pocket and we drove from Miami to L.A. to dance on the street for donations so we could stay in California and make a living.  That was in 2004.

Q. You’ve done some tour work and gone on the road with Gwen Stefani, right?
A. Legacy: I went on tour with Gwen Stefani.  It was a blessing to be able to go on the road.  I’ve done a couple things.

Q. You did very well with your contemporary routines.  What do you think it was about that style that made you do so well?
A. Legacy:  l love contemporary because it comes from the heart.  The movement doesn’t have to be perfect, the why you do it has to be perfect.  I want to be able to incorporate contemporary in my breaking and choreograph something that has not been seen by the world.

Q. What was your favorite dance that you got to perform this season?
A. Legacy: It had to be both of my contemporary routines.  It was something where I was able to dance freely and not worry about the choreography.  It was more of the feeling and what it made me feel when I dance.  It was more enjoyable than anything else.

Q. You and Ellenore really connected and worked well together.  Was she your favorite partner?
A. Legacy: I felt that every partner I had, I had a special way of connecting with them.  Some people like different partnerships that I had but I feel like all of them were equally amazing.  It was just the way that you connect with the other person as opposed to trying to be good yourself.

Q.  Is it difficult for b-boys to learn other styles of dance?
A. Legacy: The b-boy community is very internal.  It’s a certain street style of living.  The adaptability factor plays a big role because we don’t like to copy.  Contemporary dancers are trained to look at something and copy it to the best of their ability.  Adapting to a certain style for a b-boy is virtually impossible unless you have a want and desire to do it.  I hope I inspired people.
