Mollee Gray from So You Think You Can Dance Season 6

by Gina Scarpa

This week, on So You Think You Can Dance, ballroom dancer Ashleigh Di Lello was unable to perform after suffering a shoulder injury the morning of the performance episode.  Fans were still able to call in and vote for her, basing it off of everything she’s done this season, and put her through to the finale.  When her husband Ryan danced his solo, he pleaded with fans to vote for his wife so that they could dance together in next week’s finale.  On last night’s results show, fans showed their support by keeping Ashleigh and Ryan together in the competition and eliminating b-boy Legacy Perez and contemporary dancer Mollee Gray.  Today, Mollee spoke to reporters in a press conference call about her experiences on the show and her surprising elimination.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
The judges were on you a lot about your maturity on stage.  When do you feel like you took that step forward and grew as a dancer?
A. Mollee: I feel like I’ve always had a sense of maturity in my dance.  I feel like my packages may have shown a little more immaturity because I was always bubbly.  When we got into Top 8 and split our partnerships, when I was able to do more mature movement with Jive and Lyrical Jazz, and having more mature partners, I feel like I leaped forward.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted:
Was it difficult for you to be eliminated against someone who didn’t dance this week, considering how well you did?
A. Mollee: Of course I was bummed.  I think anybody would be because this is a huge, most amazing experience.  People voted on Ashleigh based on what she’s done this season and honestly, I’m so proud of how she’s grown and impressed America.  I’m proud of her and Ellenore.  All three of the girls deserve to be there.

Q. Your work has always had gymnastics and dance blend together.  Tell us about the two fields.
A. Mollee: I originally started out in gymnastics.  My mom put me in there because I was just a ball of energy.  When I was 15, I had to choose between dance and gymnastics and I ended up going with dance because I thought that would give me a bigger career.

Q. One of your biggest moments was the first rehearsal for High School Musical.  How old when you first started that?
A. Mollee: That was pretty crazy.  I was 13 years old, just a little teenager.  I went into this audition.  It was supposed to be a little, tiny film and I thought, “I might as well start my career off early.”  It ended up being a huge phenomenon!

Q. How hard was it to hear your maturity questioned on a weekly basis?
A. Mollee: That’s really funny because I’ve kind of grown up with people either liking how bubbly and little girl I am or hating it.  I accept who I am because I’m a very happy person and I love to be outgoing and be remembered.  It was kind of difficult to hear that I was immature.  I didn’t feel that I was immature, I was just more outgoing.  It showed my growth even more when I got to Top 10 so that was a bonus for me.

Q. Do you wish that you had gotten Jakob and Russell as partners earlier in the season, since you danced so well with them?
A. Mollee: I am very grateful that I got Nathan in the beginning.  It brought younger people to like the show because Nathan and I did have that younger feel to us.  By having Jakob and Russell after Top 10, it showed a lot more growth in me.  That’s what this competition is about.

Q. What is your favorite dance this season?
A. Mollee: My favorite dance that I think I’ve ever done in my entire life was the Viennese Waltz with Jakob.  He was the most amazing partner I think I’ve ever worked with.  He was so uplifting, the storyline was amazing, Jason’s choreography worked out so well… it was honestly a dream come true and the most magical experience I’ve ever been through.

Q. What’s next for you, now that your time on the show is over?
A. Mollee: I don’t know what’s in my future but I hope it involves acting, singing, and dancing.  I’ve been acting for 7 years, I’ve been singing for about 5… I feel like I have the title of triple threat.  I hope that my future involves anything in the entertainment industry whether it be Broadway, movies, anything I can be performing in!

Q. What’s the biggest thing you learned?
A. Mollee: I realized in Vegas it’s not just a dance competition.  Technique will not get you far but not to that top spot.  I was perceived as the immature one so I had to think of a way to get America to like me and not see me as the little girl.

Be sure to tune in when the Top 6 hit the stage on the finale of So You Think You Can Dance, Tuesday night at 8pm ET on FOX.
