Dancing With the Stars

by David McAlpine

Last week on Dancing With the Stars, the celebrities took to the floor in decade-themed dances. Joanna Krupa and her partner, Derek Hough, fell just short of the finale extravaganza, leaving just Mya, Kelly and Donny to dance it out for the mirror ball trophy.

Tonight, each couple has to do three dances: a ballroom dance, a freestyle to a song of their choice and a "megamix," which is a mashup of three songs where all three couples will be out on the dance floor shaking their stuff. It's a busy night tonight, so I'll get straight to the performances:

Celebrity: Kelly Osbourne
Professional Partner: Louis van Amstel
Dance: Argentine Tango
Breakdown: First the first dance, each of the couples gets to have a surprise visit from one of the judges. Kelly gets some help from Carrie Ann on her tango--who knew Carrie Ann had moves? It looks like it helped, because Kelly looks very intense on the dance floor, but not too intense. At the same time, though, it seems like Louis is pushing her around the dance floor. It's almost as if she isn't dancing with him, she's dancing for him, which is sad to see after all the progress she's mad. The judges applaud her efforts, but they're still not fully satisfied.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 9 Len: 9 Bruno: 8 Total: 26/30

Celebrity: Mya
Professional Partner: Dmitry Chaplin
Dance: Paso Doble
Song: “We Will Rock You" by Queen
Breakdown: Mya (no surprise) gets a visit from Len, her favorite judge. You know, the one who stopped her from getting 30s just about three weeks in a row? I mean really, he would be the last person I want to see. However, he is teaching her a valuable lesson in how to show passion and intensity without being too forward. Flash to the dance, where Mya totally nails it. It didn't seem like she batted an eyelash, either; it was all incredibly natural. The judges were definitely blown away.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 10 Len: 10 Bruno: 10 Total: 30/30

Celebrity: Donny Osmond
Professional Partner: Kym Johnson
Dance: Tango
Song: “Black and Gold” by Sam Sparro
Breakdown: Bruno gets to work with Donny on his cha-cha, which he seems all too excited about. Bruno is all about technique at this point and tries to get Donny to focus less on entertaining the audience and more on being a good dancer. Finally, Donny delivers a showstopping performance (especially with those hips!) that's worthy of a good score. Again, he looked so natural and in control on stage that you can tell he really worked hard on this dance.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 9 Len: 9 Bruno: 9 Total: 27/30

Now it's time for the "megamix," where the stars are doing the Viennese waltz, the samba and the jive all side by side. From the beginning, Mya is outshining the other two, and after the first dance, Donny seems to disappear into a corner. Kelly continues to fall off the beat throughout the samba, then almost completely loses it on the jive. Honestly, it seemed pretty clear cut to me that Mya was first, Donny was second and Kelly was third, but the judges still talked about how close it was. And yet Mya still got first (30 points), Donny second (28 points) and Kelly third (26 points).

Celebrity: Kelly Osbourne
Professional Partner: Louis van Amstel
Dance: Freestyle
Song: "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor
Breakdown: In rehearsal, Louis has a ton of tricks planned for this dance, all of which I'm thinking either Kelly can't do, or they'll seem too gimmicky to impress the judges. It turns out to be a bad idea, because Kelly has some major problems keeping up with the choreography and ends up falling multiple times. Still, she's incredibly graceful and gets right back up, earning praise from the judges for playing it off.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 8 Len: 8 Bruno: 8 Total: 24/30

Celebrity: Mya
Professional Partner: Dmitry Chaplin
Dance: Freestyle
Song: “You Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray
Breakdown: I don't remember the last time such an upbeat Broadway song was used on Dancing With the Stars, but I feel like it almost belongs on So You Think You Can Dance. Sure, their performance was great, but it seemed like there was something wrong with it being there, something I really couldn't put my finger on. Regardless, it was crazy energetic and enjoyable to watch.
Scores: Carrie Ann: 9 Len: 9 Bruno: 9 Total: 27/30

Celebrity: Donny Osmond
Professional Partner: Kym Johnson
Dance: Freestyle
Song: “Let The Good Times Roll" by Ray Charles
Breakdown: It's back to Broadway for Donny, who gets to perform as much as he wants for his freestyle, which seems to make him very happy. And when he hits the dance floor, you can tell how excited he is to be performing this dance as well as how well he can do it. The lifts were amazing and the speed was flawless--definitely his best performance of the entire season. The judges loved it, too, and finally gave the man a perfect 30!
Scores: Carrie Ann: 10 Len: 10 Bruno: 10 Total: 30/30

Total Scores:
Mya and Dmitry: 87/90
Donny and Kym: 85/90
Kelly and Louis: 76/90

I really think Donny is going to run away with this whole thing. Call me crazy, but I think his fan base is going to come out and support him in record numbers, or at least enough to make sure he wins the whole thing. Mya winning would be great, too, but I'd love to see Kelly win. However, I've got my money Donny, mark my words.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow night at 9/8c for the live results show to see who walks away with the winners' trophy only on Dancing With the Stars on ABC!
