Last night, on So You Think You Can Dance, things kicked off with some shocking news.  Contemporary dancer (and frontrunner) Billy Bell had to unexpectedly drop out of the competition due to illness.  He was replaced by Brandon Dumlao, a hip hop dancer who had been cut in Vegas at the very end of the audition process.  Brandon was paired with jazz dancer Pauline Mata and the pair would have to dance the dreaded slow waltz.  With only a day a half to get the choreography and chemistry together, they ended up falling short and the judges decided that he would be the first male dancer sent home.  Today, Brandon spoke to reporters in an exclusive interview and told RealityWanted how he felt about dancing against krumper Russell Ferguson for his life and the idea of coming back for season 7.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What was your reaction when Nigel said that he was going to try to bring you back for season 7?
A. Brandon: I did not expect him to say that.  I really thought that that was my only chance to be in the Top 20.  For him to propose that and let me come back if that’s possible is really crazy.  Right after I got cut, I got into some ballroom class and I’m ready!

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Were you surprised that Russell ended up in the bottom against you last night?
A. Brandon: I was so surprised!  Russell is of course a fan favorite and I’m sure the judges love him, too.  I feel like it might’ve been… when he was announced, I knd of knew that I might’ve been going home.  He was amazing and this cast was amazing.  I felt like it was unfair to take another guy’s spot.  I was happy the way it turned out.

Q. Can you give us a timeline of the time you spent with the show?
A. Brandon: I got the call on Friday at 11am and they told me that I was able to replace another dancer.  It was Billy, in this case.  I got on a plane two hours later and it was an hour flight.  I got picked up, went to the studio, found out Pauline was my partner, and went straight into rehearsal for the smooth waltz.  It was so crazy but it was such an amazing experience.

Q. When you drew the dance choice and got the waltz, what was your reaction?
A. Brandon: My reaction was that I was really nervous because I had never done a smooth waltz before but I was comfortable to do it with Pauline because we had done the cha cha together in Vegas.

Q. What’s your take on Pauline and how do you think she’ll do this season?
A. Brandon: I met her in season 5 when we auditioned and both got cut.  We have some history together.  She’s a really sick dancer.  She’s not just a jazz dancer but she knows how to do hip hop.  I feel like she can go Top 10.  I really love her.  I was really excited to be her partner.

Q. What were your top 3 scariest experiences on So You Think You Can Dance?
A. Brandon: The top 3 scariest things were: getting the call to come on the show, not knowing who my partner would be, and finding out how many hours we had left to rehearse for the piece.

Q. Do you think anything would’ve been different if you had originally been in the Top 20?
A. Brandon: I think I might’ve had a better chance just because the judges would’ve known to hold me to the same standard as everyone else.  They kept saying I didn’t have enough time because I replaced Billy.  I feel like I would’ve done a better job and they would’ve seen that and taken it into consideration.  I’m really happy the way I did and I’m really happy the way everything turned out.  I can’t pick who’s going to win.  Everyone is going to do so well!

Be sure to tune in when the Top 18 takes the stage on So You Think You Can Dance, Tuesday night at 8pm ET on FOX.
