Max Kapitannikov from So You Think You Can Dance Season 5

This week, on So You Think You Can Dance, Kayla Radomski and Max Kapitannikov continued their hot streak with a pop jazz routine choreographed by Brian Freedman.  Though the routine didn’t nearly feature Max as much as it did Kayla, it was a solid performance that earned them high praise from the judges.  It was a surprise then, when they ended up in the bottom three on last night’s results episode.  They danced for their lives and, up against Jason Glover and Kupono Aweau, Max was unable to do enough to save himself and was eliminated from the competition.  Today, he spoke to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about his experiences on the show.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Have you ever tried out for So You Think You Can Dance before and what was this experience like for you?
A. Max: This is the first time I tried out.  I have never tried out before.  I watched the other seasons and my friend pushed me to try out.  The Vegas round was very new for me and it was a great experience.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What was your reaction when you found out that Kayla was going to be your partner?
A. Max: I hadn’t spoken to Kayla before we were found out we were partners.  I didn’t get a chance to get to know her.  We found a way to communicate and work on our routines.  It was a good partnership.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Nigel said, last night, that you work harder than any other dancer.  Did you put in a lot of time outside of the rehearsals to work on your routines?
A. Max: It was very difficult for me.  I had to work extra hard to look like I know what I’m doing.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Being a ballroom dancer, which style of dance was the hardest for you to pick up?
A. Max: I think they were all equal in difficulty.  I haven’t tried any other styles, like krumping or Bollywood.  Everything else is pretty equal.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you think that your routine this week was too weird for America to appreciate?
A. Max: This routine, I think, you either really hate or love.  I mean, I loved it.  I loved doing it and wanted to make sure that it was done great so people would get the idea.  We were just hoping that America would.  I had a lot of people call me and say they had never seen stuff like that before and were impressed.  I think it’s something I can take back with me and be proud of.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: You received such great feedback from the judges so were you surprised to land in the bottom three?
A. Max: Yeah, in a way, I was surprised that I was in the bottom because I thought that the routine was pretty good.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: The judges always talk about ballroom dancers struggling in their solos.  How do you feel you did last night?
A. Max: It was a great experience.  The crowd gives you back so much energy.  It’s great just being on that stage just hearing people scream your name.  It’s something that I will really remember for the rest of my life.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: Do you think that being on the show will help your career as you move forward?
A. Max: Yeah definitely the show opened up a lot of doors for me.  I’m gonna keep improving and keep dancing and see where it takes me.
