Helen Phillips Winner of The Biggest Loser Couples

by Gina Scarpa

On last night's live season finale of The Biggest Loser: Couples, Helen Phillips astounded her fans and her fellow players by dropping 140 pounds, winning the competition.  The 48-year-old retired retail manager lost more than 54% of her total body weight, weighing in at just 117 pounds.  She walked away with the grand prize of $250,000 and has been doing non stop press, including an appearance on QVC tonight.  Today, she took time out of her hectic schedule to talk to reporters in a conference call.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: When did the turning point happen for you in the competition, when you realized that you could win this thing?
A. Helen: I think it was three months into it, when I was finally getting out of my little slump. I was kind of doubting myself and then I started running. I think that was the whole thing. When I started running, and I finished that half marathon, I started getting stronger and believing in myself. I started thinking, “Maybe I can do this. You shouldn’t doubt yourself so much.” Something just clicked inside of me and I said, “I’m tired of doubting myself. I’m tired of saying, ‘No I can’t!’” The minute I started doing that, things started to turn around for me.

Read on for Helen’s answers to questions from the media…

Q. How much weight did you end up losing at home on your own?
A. Helen: I lost 32 pounds at home before the finale.

Q. Have you considered surgery for dealing with the excess skin that you were talking about?
A. Helen: I have discussed that with my doctor but I need to work on toning first. I would consider chest surgery because I don’t think you can tone this area. That would probably be the only area I would consider.

Q. How scared were you when you found out that you had to run a marathon?
A. Helen: Oh, I was freaking out! I thought, “26.2 miles? Are you kidding me?” The half marathon almost killed me but I was in worse shape then. When they told me that, if I finished, I received $10,000 to give to a charity of my choice, I didn’t care of I ran, walked, or crawled across the finish line, I was getting there. That was wonderful. That was a great feeling.

Q. When you saw Tara winning the challenges week after week, did you think that anyone in the end was going to be able to beat her?
A. Helen: Tara was a hard worker. She deserved everything that she won because she really worked hard for it. We all did. She was just a little faster than some of us. I knew, when I got home, that I was working so hard and that I was so dedicated and so driven. Something inside of me clicked and I knew that I was going to win this. I just felt it inside of me. I thought to myself, “There was a reason why I didn’t win anything else because I was meant to win the big one.”

Q. What was it like to see Jerry win the at home prize?
A. Helen: Oh my god, I was elated! I was so happy that he won. He certainly deserved it. The things that Jerry had gone through in the very first week of being on campus, I will never forget. He was a very sick man and he made it through! It doesn’t matter how old you are. You can go on this journey and you can become a winner.

Q. Was there anything that you found out that you liked when you changed your eating habits, that perhaps you didn’t like before?
A. Helen: I think I was very surprised by some of the foods that I was not aware of. I’ve never had Almond Milk… different things like that. I had never eaten some of the different foods that were introduced to me. For me, it was a big thing with vegetables. I never really ate vegetables before. Now, my body craves broccoli!
