American Idol Season 8: Top 4 Performance Recap

It’s almost time for the end of this season of American Idol, my friends, and honestly, it’s anybody’s game.  I’m sure there are a large majority of you out there that thinks that Adam has this thing in the bag.  His arrogance could be his undoing and that seemed obvious after he landed in the bottom three last week.  Hopefully, he learned his lesson… seriously, who are we kidding?  This could be the strongest Top 4 the show has ever seen and it’s rocker night tonight, complete with solos and duets, a first for the show.  It should be interesting, especially considering Slash (of Guns N Roses) is the mentor.  Let’s get to it.

Adam Lambert - "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin
HA!  Slash tells Adam not to sing so much in the stratosphere.  I think it’ll be the only time in life that Slash and I are on the same page about something.  Yeah, Adam doesn’t listen at all.  At this point, I almost feel like Adam has shown us every trick he has and I don’t know where he can go from here.  I’m not overly impressed by it, maybe because I’m used to him by now, but the judges love it.  Just keep pushing him towards the finale, guys.

Allison Iraheta - "Cry Baby" by Janis Joplin
You gotta love Allison… she’s a little fighter, isn’t she?  It’s hard to go up against people like Danny and Adam, who are the favorites to square off in the finale.  The judges wanted to see her choose another song and are a little hard on her.  I, on the other hand, enjoyed her performance and I’m usually the first one to come down on her.  She even fights back against the judges, making her case for her song choice.  Allison, I’m starting to like you more and more.

Kris Allen and Danny Gokey - "Renegade" by Styx
Kris and Danny decide to sing a capella for the first part but these two have pretty perfect pitch so it’s the right choice.  Once the band kicks in, Danny completely takes over the song but it really caters to him.  These two have absolutely no chemistry together and look like they were forced to sing together.  Well, they were.  Simon gets right to it, saying flat out that Danny is better than Kris.  Ouch.

Kris Allen - "Come Together" by The Beatles
Here’s Kris’s chance to redeem himself after being shown up minutes earlier by Danny.  I love The Beatles and I love this song so I have high hopes.  Kris doesn’t carry the vocal power that Danny or Adam do, but he’s still my favorite in the competition.  I don’t need all the flash.  Kris is a great musician with great pitch and a great sounding voice.  He’s likeable enough, though in recent weeks, he’s started to look more and more unhappy on that stage.  No surprise, the judges come down on him, too.  There may be surprises on elimination night, but none when it comes to who the judges are pulling for.

Danny Gokey - "Dream On" by Aerosmith

I can't help but laugh a little.  When I heard that Danny chose this song, I figured Danny woke up one day last week, looked at himself in the mirror and said, "Adam's not the only one who can scream in his songs.  I'll show him!"  It's a strong performance but Adam would've sang it better.  It warms my heart that the judges say they didn't love the performance just because it's rare that he or Adam receive negative comments.  Everyone can grow and learn.  Still, Danny receives an A+ for effort from Randy.  Fair enough.

Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta - "Slow Ride" by Foghat

Well, first thing's first.  I like this pairing.  Secondly, I didn't think that I would like this song for them but my mind is quickly changed in the first 30 seconds.  It's a great song choice and the two have a hell of a lot more chemistry on stage than Kris or Danny did.  They also look like they're having a lot more fun, too.  The judges are smitten, calling them a perfect pair and saying they should record a duet together.  Agreed.  This was my favorite performance of the night!

Be sure to tune in to American Idol to find out who will be eliminated on tomorrow night’s live results show, 9pm ET on FOX.
