When you think of current artists on the pop, country, and R&B charts, the music of The Rat Pack doesn’t exactly come to mind.  American Idol, however, is out to change that on tonight’s performance episode.  The Top 5 take the stage, with a little help from mentor Jamie Foxx, who apparently is an expert on The Rat Pack because he starred in the movies Ray and Dreamgirls.  The guy does have a pretty sweet R&B career at the moment so I won’t take anything away from him.  With that, let’s get to tonight’s performances.

Kris Allen - "The Way You Look Tonight"
Ah, I love this song and Kris does really well with the vocals.  The arrangement is a bit too subdued for me in the beginning, but picks up towards the end.  I’m still a fan of the guy and I think he could have a nice career when Idol ends, IF he makes the right album.  Randy calls this his best performance to date.  I’m not sure I’d go that far but I do love what he did tonight.

Allison Iraheta - "Someone to Watch Over Me"
I’m diggin’ the song choices tonight!  Allison looks very pretty and has toned down her image quite a bit.  I wouldn’t call myself the biggest Allison Iraheta fan, but I do think she’s not getting as much credit as she deserves this season, at least when it comes to America.  Allison sings the song extremely well and is as calm and collected as I’ve ever seen her.  Kara thinks Allison’s performance was way beyond her years, in a good way.  Agreed.  However, Simon doesn’t feel her commitment to the song and fears she’ll be in trouble tomorrow night.

Matt Giraud - "My Funny Valentine"
To the best of my knowledge, this is at least the third time this song has been done on Idol.  As soon as I hear he’s doing this song, Constantine Maroulis and Melinda Doolittle come to mind which opens him up for more than one comparison.  While I like the vocals, I’m not sure how I feel about the performance.  The judges are also on the fence about Matt’s rendition of the song and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him in the bottom tomorrow, though it hurts my heart a little to say that.

Danny Gokey - "Come Rain, Come Shine"

Let's start with the good.  I'm happy to see Danny get away from those cheesebucket songs he's been picking the last few weeks.  I needed something a bit more mature from him, something with a little more depth, and he did with tonight's song choice.  Also, there's never denying Danny's vocal abilities.  The guy can SING.  The only real problem with tonight's performance is that it took too long to get going but when it did finally get going, man, was it great.  Paula calls it a stellar performance.  That's the most sense she's made in weeks.

Adam Lambert - "Feeling Good"

It seems like there isn't a person alive who doesn't fall under Adam's spell, and Jamie Foxx is no exception.  Adam's version of "Feeling Good" ain't your grandmother's version but would you expect anything less from this guy?  Once again, he kills the vocals but I could still do without the screaming.  Still, the guy always wins the stage presence award week after week in my book.  Kara says her mouth drops open every time he performs.  I'm sure a lot of people feel that way.  She also called him: confusing and shocking and superb.  Ditto.
