Survivor: Tocantins - Episode 1 Recap

Tonight, Survivor returns for its 18th season and this time around, the contestants will be competing in Brazil.  16 players will play in an area of Brazil called Tocantins, where the brutal temperatures can reach 120 degrees.  The players have already been divided into 2 tribes, Jalapao and Timbira.  Host Jeff Probst says that first impressions are going to be extremely important on tonight's episode.  The 39 day competition starts now!

The truck carrying the survivors makes an abrupt stop and Jeff tells the tribes that they'll have 60 seconds to grab whatever supplies they can for their respective campsites.  Crates, bales of hay, twine, and food are gathered and immediately after, Jeff gives them a compass and a map to get to their camp… which is a 4 hour walk!  They're not leaving just yet, though.  Jeff tells them that they're going to vote one player from each tribe off right now and those people will not continue "in this adventure".

Sandy is voted out of the Jalapao tribe because of her age while Sierra is voted out of Timbira for appearing physically weak.  However, Sandy and Sierra won't be leaving the game.  They just won't be joining the tribes yet.  Instead, they'll take a helicopter ride over while the others make that brutal 4 hour trek to their camps.  They'll have to work very hard to change the first impressions they gave to their teammates.  When Sandy arrives at her camp, she opens a piece of tree mail which says that she can spend her time starting to build camp or start looking for a hidden immunity idol.  Sandy tries looking for the idol but is unsuccessful.  Sierra chooses to build the camp instead, in order to change her tribe's opinion of her.

Jalapao makes it back before dark but is less than thrilled to see that Sandy did nothing when she arrived at camp.  While they work on camp the next morning, Sandy excuses herself to go to the bathroom and goes looking for the idol again.  In her second attempt, she comes up emptyhanded and the Jalapao tribe members figure out that she must be up to something.  Timbira got to their camp much later, long after the sun has set, and they appreciated that a shelter has basically been constructed for them singlehandedly by Sierra.  Still, many of her tribemates feel that she needs to go first or early on this season.

For their first challenge, 6 tribe members will race across a series of sand hills and into the river where they must retrieve a raft full of puzzle planks.  The two remaining tribe members will use the puzzle planks to build a ladder.  Once the entire tribe is at the top of the ladder, two players must use a peg to navigate through a wooden maze and release their flag.  The winning tribe receives fire and immunity.  Tibira gets their planks back first and begins building their staircase.  Though Sandy helped Jalapao make this a close race, Tibira emerges victorious.

Back at the Jalapao camp, the debate begins: Should they vote off Sandy or Carolina?  The only reason to get rid of Sandy is her age while some consider getting rid of Carolina because she's difficult to deal with.  At tribal council, Sandy makes her case to stay in the game, saying that her heart is truly in this.  Carolina admits that she can be demanding and whiny but says that she'll try to check herself before she speaks.  Here are the votes: Sandy.  Carolina.  Carolina.  Carolina.  Carolina.  Carolina.

Five votes is enough and Carolina becomes the first player voted out of Suvivor: Tocantins and will be talking to RealityWanted in an exclusive interview about her time playing the game.  Don't miss it!
